I remove the shields, if possible. Some have non-removable shields, and some, like handle bearings, are too small for me to remove. Take the shields off, if you can, for cleaning. I bought some PS, on J Francho's rec, and it is what he claims it to be. Just about perfect for the job.

 

I rinse mine by placing all the bearings from one reel in a fine mesh strainer and pour a teapot full of boiling water over them. Allow to air dry, then lube to your preference.

Nope. Works well as a finishing bath. I prefer acetone as a last bath. Dries quicker.

 

Acetone still leaves a residue though, why not use 91% alcohol and blow on it to evaporate? It's one of the few cleaners that leaves anything behind.

Repeated & prolonged Naphtha exposure has health implications as well. So far, Perfect Solution seems to be just that.

I'll check it out, could you post a link please so I don't buy the wrong stuff.

Acetone leaves LESS residue than naphtha. Electronics alcohol leaves less, but is slow drying and also leaves a residue.

But read what I said later - I'm not using anything other than PS. This isn't a set science, and methods evolve.

I've said it before; there's no such thing as a cleaner that will leave no residue behind. Don't believe me? Try this.

 

Wipe out your favorite coffee mug with your miracle "leaves no residue" cleaning agent. Let it dry overnight. Pour yourself a cup of coffee the next day and drink it. Drink all of it, then tell me it left no residue.

The bearing blaster hold the bearing and directs/concentrates the spray stream. Solvents are bad enough to work with, I avoid combining them with aerosols if at all possible. For a reel here or there it's not as big a deal but then again neither is a few extra minutes.  

Did 2 of my Chronarchs and a Curado, the other day, flushed all stock spool bearings and the handle bearings for the heck of it. Used lighter fluid, I gotta say they are pretty d**n fast and smooth now. When I pick up the perfect solution stuff this weekend, gonna do a couple more reels with that. Finally got the Shimano maitnence down to a science. Not looking forward to doing the Tatulas. lol

Finally got over to the Lowes to get some Perfect Solution. They must not move much of the stuff because it was on clearance for $2.19 and all of the bottles were super dusty.

I soaked the two bearings still giving me trouble all evening with the occasional ultrasonic blast and spin test. Wasn't really seeing any improvement. I'll let them soak overnight but I am not hopeful, I think the bearings are shot.

grabbed it today I already had a zep cleaner degreaser looks like same thing? So just soak em and let air dry like I do with lighter fluid?
