hello, everyone i live in Orlando ive been on lake toho a couple of times with very little luck. i know the fish are there. because i showed up to the wounded worrier tournament weigh in and they pulled some monsters.. what are some good dark water central florida water lures?

hello, everyone i live in Orlando ive been on lake toho a couple of times with very little luck. i know the fish are there. because i showed up to the wounded worrier tournament weigh in and they pulled some monsters.. what are some good dark water central florida water lures?

My go to baits for anywhere in florida are: Florida five-o colored swimbaits (big EZ and EZ swimmer) black and blue sieberts brush head with a black and blue rage craw, Spinner baits chartreuse/white (they're more weedless than you'd think throw them in wood and grass), rage toads, small 1/8 oz xraps jerk bait worked fast also in weeds, yo-zuri, redeye shad, and xcalibur lipless baits also around grass and structure (1/2 and 5/8 oz), Texas rigged Ol'monster in black or a rage smokin rooster in black/blue, and if all else fails a June bug or black/blue senko wacky rigged should get it done.

Any recommendation, for fishing the Hillsborough river around Tampa? Watermelon red works great in my friends lake but havent had much luck in the river, thinking of picking up some june bug worms, maybe a couple of Senkos, though i normally have best results with Zoom trick worms

Hey everyone. Just getting back into freshwater fishing after living in Key West for a long time. I'm in Inverness now.

I got a little jonboat and have taken it out once on the Withlacoochee River. I got a couple bites on a black worm, Texas rigged, but didn't hook anything. I think I was using too heavy weight. 1/4 oz. I was also using 3/0 wide gap worm hook in that bright red color. 

 

Fish were active on the surface all around me and if I would have had a topwater lure I would have tried it.

 

I didn't get out until mid-day, not sure if that matters.

 

There's also the Tsala Apopka chain of lakes right here.

 

I'd appreciate any advice, on whatever.

Mid day top water activity this time of year isn't "normally" bass. Most likely cichlids and other types of panfish. 1/4oz weights are plenty small enough. Lots of guys use even heavier to get through the slop down the the biguns hiding down in the shade. Try a senko type worm or a fluke and you may start catching some more. Can never go wrong with junebug.

Welcome to BR, as far as colors, I mainly throw watermelon varieties and okeechobee colors. As far as weights go, I agree with your assessment, the weight you were using was too heavy. Imho nothing effects the action of a worm more so than a too much weight. The weights I throw range from 1/32-1/8. More than that you are dealing with really bad wind or really deep water. If you want your worm to create more action, downsize one more size. 2/0 EWG. Again, keeping the bait as natural and light as possible will increase your hook up %. Good luck and see you around.

I saw the Senkos and was like "those are weird, they'll never work" lol, I told you it's been a while!!

 

I'll try a bit of each, going lighter weight, senkos, colors, etc. 

 

The river water is real dark in summer, the lakes are pretty clear.

Made it out for the first time in a while last Saturday morning.  I was fishing with my brother in law and we each picked up 3 fishing submerged weeds in around 8ft of water.  I got all of mine on a zoom mag finesse, nothing very impressive size wise.  He picked up 2 on a wacky rigged strike king ocho and one that went 4.75lbs on the scale using live bait he was dragging behind the boat.  Its a pretty clear lake around 7ft of visibility surface temps in the low to mid 80's.   I caught a couple small ones on a different lake on a baby torpedo right after the sun set that evening.

Watermelon red has been great in the river lately. What part of the river are you fishing?

I went back out on the Withlacoochee this morning. I didn't change anything except the worm color. I went with a watermelon seed Zoom Trick worm. I also got out much earlier. I think I was fishing by 9:30.

 

I caught 3 small-medium bass and my first mudfish. Those things fight pretty hard, I thought I had a real nice bass.

 

Anyway, it was a fun morning.

Riverbug...good color.... look at gambler and bitters colors. VIBE and Ribbon tails.

Anybody have any tips for this tough summer fishing? Haven't been having the best of luck lately here in Orlando area. We've been throwing all kinds of stuff but have had some luck on a carolina rig. This is my first summer fishing from a boat.

Most of the time in the Florida summer I've always been able to stay shallow in grass and catch fish. This year has been different. The only way I've been able to catch them consistently is finding deeper water and fishing painfully slow.
