Bass2124
What is a good econimical jerkbait. These friggin things are expensive! I normally use Hula Poppers (greatest thing ever in my opinion) for top water and have several crankbaits for below surface but have never had any luck with the one jerkbait that I have. Why are they more expensive than a crankbait anyway??? I bought a cheap one for 2.99 in the junk section at BPS once and never caught a thing with it. Thought about adding a few to the tacklebox but don't reaally want to pay $15-20 for them.
Zach Dunham
Smithwick Suspending Rogues are $5-$7 depending on where you buy them and they work great.
papajoe222
Smithwick Rogue and Bomber Long A are both productive baits that won't empty your wallet and they come in both floating and suspending versions.
Hogsticker
River2Sea Humbug minnow. Its been my most productive jerk and I've just about thrown them all. Its less than 6 bucks and will catch fish!
Super User WIGuide Posted March 13, 2014 Super User Share Posted March 13, 2014 Smithwick Rogues are good. I also like the Bass Pro XPS suspending jerkbait in the bigger size.
Super User Jar11591 Posted March 13, 2014 Super User Share Posted March 13, 2014 The most economical jerkbait (and best all around IMO) is the Matzuo Phantom Minnow. I think it retails for $2.29 and it has more action than any other jerkbait on the market. They aren't very durable though.
Siebert Outdoors
I'd say a smithwick rogue or the Rick Clunn megabass look alike.

Super User smalljaw67 Posted March 13, 2014 Super User Share Posted March 13, 2014 The Smithwick Ralttlin' Rogue, be careful which one you get as there are a bunch of different models so make sure you get a suspending model. Rapala X-Rap and the Husky Jerk, I love the X-Rap and the Husky jerk is a proven fish catcher. Last in the group of less expensive baits that work, is the Storm Twitch Stick, normally these are anywhere from $5.50 at a high price and $3.88 at the low end sale price but Tackle Warehouse has them for $4.99. The Storm Twitch Stick is decent at suspending in the 10 size which is 4" long, the smaller 3.25" size 8 needs a suspend dot and sometimes 1.5 to suspend properly but they work and the reason is they have a characteristic that up until they came out, only Lucky Craft Pointers had. That characteristic is a free moving ball inside that causes the bait to wobble or vibrate when it comes to a dead stop, that little bit of movement is a killer when the fish won't commit to other baits, it is the best deal in jerkbaits at the moment. mod479
I like X-raps and Husky jerks. Change the stock hooks out and add something sticky. Add suspend strip/dot to the underside of the baits bill, then test in some cool water til it suspends or barely sinks, you can cut off small portions of the strip depending on your water temps, and always be suspending. why on the underside of the bill? Gives it that nose down attitude that a pointer or 110 will make outta the box.
