Question About Post Spawn Fry

Featured Replies

I was wondering how long a bass will guard it's nest before it leaves it's off spring. Do they just leave them after they hatch or wait for them to develop for a while? Thanks guys!

No set time, usually a few days after the fry hatches, the male leaves and the fry become part of the food chain for several larger predator fish including bass and bluegill or crappie.

It's a great way to find males. Drop a senko in the school of fry.

I have seen balls of fry in golf course ponds of various sizes guarded by large bass, I would think its weeks before the guard is dropped.

The buck bass is the designated protectorate who defends the fry for an indeterminate period.

When he grows tired of his chores and the fry are bite-size, the buck turns on the fry and devours his own offspring.

This sends a clear signal to the fry pod, that it's time to leave the nest.
