Sickle Hooks....anybody try em or have opinion?

Recommended Posts

Saw some Matsuo sickle hooks in a store....looked em up and supposedly the shape makes them strong enough to enable use of lighter wire. Anybody try them?

I use them in the 1-2/0 sizes for crappie jigs, they are awesome for that.  In those sizes I would be concerned about using them for bass though, the ones I use are light wire and they bend a little which is great for crappie fishing because you can get them unsnagged but probably not so much for a big bass :)

I'm just guessing though, I haven't bass fished with them.

You know, someone around here actually gave me some dartheads with a sickle hook and said he swore by 'em.  I did notice I actually had really solid hookups with them.  I've been thinking of changing out to all sickle style since then, not sure they make a HUGE help but hey, maybe it's in my head too but it still is nice to even think I'll be hooking em better!

The ones I used were probably a 2/0-3/0 and a 1/8-1/4 oz weight.  I was happy with them overall.  I think there is another manufacturer that uses a very similar shape but goes by a different name as well.  I'm not sure which exactly were in the ones that I used but I personally liked them.

I also tried them on crappie jigs and really liked them for crappie fishing.

I also tried some treble hooks on jerkbaits and topwater baits. The reason I remember is I nearly bled to death changing the hooks, d@@@ they're sharp.  The hookup ratio seemed  low to me so I quit using them. Nothing scientific, it just seemed like I lost fish I should not have lost. Lost confidence in them. However they are as sharp as any hook I have used...........................Al

I have used them some - I do like the design, but the point is easier to get bent than say a Mustad Ultrapoint.

But they are wicked sharp - there is a single-strand weedguard ballhead jig that has them that I use for changing presentations quickly - just perfect for that.

I use the sickle octopus hooks for wacky rigging. They are crazy sharp thats for sure.

I have also used 2/0-4/0 trebles on trolling spoons for salmon and they held up. Step on one and its over. Never broke one on a fish but have had them bend on fish.

I had some 3 or 4 years ago they were horrible as the points would bend over and at times already bent over from new right out of the package won't use them anymore.

I have some EWG's that I bought on clearance a few years back. They are very sharp but I have never used them. For tex-posing I just don't like the way the bait sits on the hook. The "sickle" portion of the hook seems like it would ball the baits up and possibly prevent hook sets. Just a confidence thing on my part and the hooks may be great, I just don't like them.

They're great for panfish, but they aren't very good in the river where there's a lot of snags.  I've broken a few hooks at the first bend when trying to unsnag them.  I use fireline on my river rods.  It has NO stretch, so the hook is taking all the force.

I've also never caught anything over 3lbs on them.

I've since gotten away from that style hook.

I bought some and used them for Trigging.  They were terrible of hetting hookups and keeping fish on.  If I still have them around, I'd send them to you so you can see what I mean.
