I usually go with EWG hooks, but what are times when EWG hooks aren't needed?

When using ribbontail worms or any other slim-profile bait I usually use a 1/0-2/0 straight shank offset worm hook. With creatures, flukes and thicker baits I will use EWG. Always Gamakatsu, just personal preference.

The largest one you can fit without altering the shape of the bait. EWG is an almost all around hook type opposed to other types because it has the widest throat and fits most baits opposed to straight shanks or offsets that not always fit wide/thick/beefy baits.

For me, hook choice is a matter of form & function: which hook fits the bait best and will at the same time ensure optimum hook penetration and holding power. That needs to happen without hindering the baits action / strike attracting ability.  I prefer EWG hooks over round bend (and just about anything else I've tried) for most every application including flipping; a good majority of anglers prefer a straight shank hook for that.

 

The hook you choose may vary based on personal preference and confidence.  The wire size of the hook plays a role in the decision as well.

I generally use offset shanks for thinks like worms, EWG for he thicker baits. the purpose of the EWG is to give the plastic someplace to go so that the hook has enough room to get the fish.  size is all preference.

I am the same as Alpha Male, offset straight shank hooks unless its a really thick bait then I will use an EWG.

I've used the Gammy EWGs from weightless to punching and never felt like I needed to use a different hook. I have a variety of hooks and haven't noticed much of a difference from one to another.

The only ones listed that I don't use an EWG style hook for is the soft jerkbait, the reason is no matter what brand of EWG hook I use, a soft jerkbait will always slide down the hook on me without a drop of glue. I like the Trokar TK-100 HD worm hook for soft jerkbaits  and for trick worms.
