Rod/reel Combo For Little Girl

Featured Replies

With spring and summer coming my wife has mentioned about going fishing.  We have a little girl that turned 2 in January, and I was wondering what kind of combo to get her.  Do you guys think she is too young to be fishing yet?  My wife said we could buy her one of those rod and reels at walmart that has the characters on it.  Maybe I'm just thinking thats not fishing and maybe she doesn't need a real hook yet.  What are ya'lls opinions for a 2 year old?

I let mine use my ultra lite

I did however just get her 13ambition combo...she is four

My little one used a "Barbie" zebco thing from just before 2 until last summer (just turned 4).  This year I have her set up with an 500 (UL) sized reel and a 4'6" UL spinning rod.

Go to, fish and save, he has combos for kids in the combo section. I just purchased my 4yo grandson a batman combo. He loves Batman. He plays batman with my misses, she's the joker every time.

Yea, I'd go with something that she likes. I find my little one seems to eye the Disney princess outfits. Make it fun for her. Go out to catch bluegills, use beemoths and worms. She'll have a blast.

Have a good time, you'll make moments both of you will always remember! Great job taking the family too, I like to have my wife and daughter join me. We have a great time, it's always a fun time. Take a lunch and make it an adventure.

Too young for a real rig, buy her a pink toy type set up.

No hooks for sure!

My little one is getting a new Zebco KVD for kids which I got on sale at Wally World.

I knew I was doing something right when I took her to the Suffern Show with me and she saw some Strike King lures and yelled "Look daddy it's KVD.  I saw him on TV".

My son has a cheap Cars combo.  He is 4 now and he loves it.  I definitely don't give him a hook yet (but he's starting to understand about hooks and why he doesn't have one).  I basically tie on a cheap plastic swim bait (dollar store), cut the hook part off and let him cast and reel.  I also tied on a lipless crank too without the hooks.  He really enjoys it.

The attention span for little ones is so short I wouldn't buy anything specific for them. A toy with a hookless practice plug if anything. They'll be splashing, chasing butterflies etc. Let them  cast an ultra-light if they want to and then help reel in a fish. Keep it light and fun at this age and by the time she's 6 or so she'll want "one like Dad's". Savor every second. My baby's 19 and seems like yesterday she was running around this way.

One more thing: don't expect to be able to seriously fish with the kids along. If you get frustrated it will kill their enthusiasm quickly.

Agree completely.  I don't even bring my stuff.  I work with them to try and have them catch fish.  If they lose interest and run someplace else I am fishing with their setups.  Can you picture me fishing with a Barbie setup.  LOL

I will admit I have on those occasions.  :)

Based on the fish in your Avatar....YES. lol

My 3 yo has a princess combo. She beats it up pretty good. I wouldn't bother with anything more than that or trust her with hooks unless I'm right next to her. After 10 or 15 mins of her "fishing", she's chasing ducks or trying to get into the water.

We do practice casting in the living room though. She likes it and that's what counts imo.
