Whats Causing My Handle To Peel Off?

Featured Replies

My favorite brand of reel in my arsenal is Lews, i've had nothing wrong happen to them so far. But on Sat. I noticed that the material on the handle was starting to peel off. We pulled in to a marina to eat lunch for an hour and it was laying in the sun, do you think that caused it? I'm planning on buying a bunch more and i dont wanna have this happen again. Are there any ways I can prevent this from happening again without having to spend any money on reel grips or nothin like that?

i've heard of this one some lew's reels in other threads.  i only have one speed spool, fairly new so no damage yet.  although they are pretty soft/tacky feeling and do feel like they could peel or crack

its not reely bad its just a little bit on the edge of the handle

what part of the handle? The rubber grips? I've had nothing but trouble with shimano' s rubber grips. Or do you mean the paint on the crank? Is it metal or carbon that's delaminating?

This has happened to a number of my Lew's reels. You can either email info@lews.com to let them know what happened and they will send you replacements, their customer service is great. Or you can buy reel grips, which is what I prefer to do because I like to use them anyway and they stop the peeling. Hope this helps

I've had no problems with lews. Also, was it Clemson Marina?

Have you used any kind of sunscreen while you were out fishing? Last summer I noticed that when I was fishing that my grips on my TP were starting to shed little bits of rubber. I am pretty positive that is what caused it because it didn't happen to me until then.

It's a semi common problem. Out of 10 Lews reels I had it happen to one and it was shortly after buying it. Call or email and they'll send you 2 new knobs free of charge.

With Shimano grips, sunscreens and GULP products can eat the material. I don't know about Lew's, but it's a possibility that you had some form of chemical from a bait, or otherwise, that's tearing it up.

This is not unusual with Shimano reels, do an internet search ad you will find dozens of posts.  Shimano will say it's insect repellent or sunscreen, the fact is that many people that have this problem don't use either.  I've replaced grips on 2 stradics, make sure you remove the bearings from the old grips, they are not supplied when just buy the grip.

They had a bad run of knobs with the coating peeling off, shoot em a call and like a few others said they will have new knobs out in a few days. Lews did state that they redesigned the coating process and it was just a fluke. Any new reels you should be fine.
