Never Fished Frogs. Ideas?

Featured Replies

I have never fished using frogs before but ever since I watched that video on here I'm pretty set on buying a couple. That being said I have no idea what some good ones are. What do you guys think?

Hollow Body: Stanley Top Toad (soft plastic type with paddle tails) Booyah Poppin Pad Crusher (has a pop'r style and can be fished that way or with a walking style)

Solid Body: Stanley Ribbit

Get you some braided line, I use 30# power pro

First off use Braided line - something between 40 - 65 depending on the cover.

I've used and like Koppers Live Target Hollow Body Frog, Spro Dean Rojas Bronzeye Frog, Strike King KVD Sexy Frog, & Spro Dean Rojas Bronzeye Poppin' Frog.

There are many others that have a decent record of performance but those are the one I have experience with.

Tip - WAIT a beat after seeing the strike to set the hook.  Traditional advice revolves around "feeling the weight of the fish" before setting the hook.

Sometimes that's hard to do but is solid advice.

Also adding a slippery scent to the bait like Megastrike can help a few ways.  Might keep the fish holding on a bit longer, helps the bait slip through cover and could help on hook sets too.

Good Luck

booyah pad crashers-they are affordable and have a great hook up ratio

Nothing is more fun that teasing out huge topwater hits on frogs.  It's so intense!

Your in for treat!! Frog fishing is the best!! What everyone has mentioned above are your common frog brands.. Buy a few different brands and over time you will see what you like the best. Good Luck!!

Bronzeye and Strike King my faves, also the Ish Phat Frogs

Like others have said, depending on the cover that is around (grass, down trees) use braid.  I like 55lb braid, on a MH to H rod.  Use a twitch twitch pause type of cadence (hollow body), however you want to work it, and wait 2-3 seconds to feel the weight of the fish, and then give a quick snappy hook set.  Fishing topwater will really get your blood pumping.  And don't be afraid to throw it up under overhanging trees, deep into standing grass because more times than not, there is a big fish waiting to ambush anything skipping along the surface of the water.

Look into the Booyah Pad Crashers. They're great frogs and my go to frogs. Spros are also great frogs, but I feel the "crashers" are just as good and a fraction of the price.

I'm planning on fishing frogs more this year.   I just got one of those "Flip the Bird" lures, so that is the bait I'm going to start with this year.

My favorite hollow body is the River 2 Sea Spittin' Wa. My favorite buzz frogs are the 42 Tackle Conpany 42 Toad and the Stanley Ribbit.
