Fueling Up / Mixing Oil

Featured Replies

I have 2 16 gal. tanks on my Stratos and mix 50:1.  Let me preface my question by saying that I don't fully trust my fuel guage.  Are there any tips on the best way to fuel up?  For example, I may pour in enough oil for 6 gal. of gas only to find out that I the tank would only hold 4 more gallons.  I would then not have the right oil to gas ratio.  I guess its possible to only add enough oil for a gallon of gas at time, but that would take forever.

Thoughts?

A little too much oil won't hurt anything. Too little oil will

I just add the oil for the amount of gas I'm going to put in and when I get to that point I stop. I hardly ever fill my tank all the way up. If you need to though, figure out how much gas you think you will need, add oil, and fill. However much more gas it takes over what you though add that oil after. As much as you boat will be bouncing around on the way there the oil will get mixed in. Like Slo said, too much oil isn't going to hurt anything. The only thing that will happen is your plugs will foul faster, but I'd rather replace my plugs every year than pay for a rebuild.

I try to mix in 5 gal fuel cans so I know the mix is right. If I fuel up at the station I make sure I put in gas first and then oil since it will mix on the way to the ramp.

I have the same problem.  There is no way to trust my gauge.  What I have went to is just putting enough for a trip I might make.  If I think I need more gas, I have 2 dedicated 6 gallon cans that I fill up and just add using the cans.  Sometimes I go to the store without my boat and just carry the cans a couple of days before hand.  I use non ethanol and not many places to get it.

Fill it with gas first then add oil. It'll mix on the way to the ramp. If you really want to too, just shake the gas can around a little

Walmart and any auto store has them as well.  I usually fill until the nozzle stops, see how much it was, then add the amount based on the measuring bottle.  The nozzle stops with plenty of room left for the oil.

I always try to keep my tanks filled, always add Stabil and oil of choice to recommended ratio.  I usually top off at the gas station after the or just prior to trip and then add oil after pumping.  That way you don't have to worry about it since you know exactly the volume you pumped and can add mixing oil and stabilizer accordingly. Also keeping tanks filled keeps condensation from building up on fuel tanks walls and mixing water into your fuel.

Buy this and keep it in your boat or truck and be done with it.
