swim jig ?

Featured Replies

would like some input on when you would use a swim jig instead of a spinnerbait. thanks in advance

pressured waters, clear conditions, more subtle approach

personally I like to use it this time of year especially behind someone throwing a spinnerbait.

I like to have a ragetail trailer on it because that gives off a lot of vibration but not as much as a spinnerbait or a crankbait would. For muddy waters throw the black/blue combo and for clear water a white will work but then in the summer months switch to a bluegill colored swim jig.

toss that bait right up on to the shore and swim it back with pumps in the rod and hang on ;D

I think the fish in my pond are so sick of seeing a spinnerbait that they are slow to hit it. Plus I like to see the strike, sometimes it looks like someone flushed the commode

I will throw a swim jig all day everyday.  They are great producers.

I will throw a swim jig anytime and anywhere.  I prefer swim jigs over spinner baits.  I will mainly throw 1/4oz and occasionally throw a 3/8oz.  I prefer to use 1/4oz the majority of the time and with no rattles.  But if the water is real grassy or muddy then I will add rattles.

The nice thing about throwing a swim jig is you can cast it out there and just let it sit for a couple minutes like a regular jig and if no takers then start swimming it back in.  They also work wonderfully in the grass.

For colors any color is ok, but I prefer white with some shades of blue and red on the jig or the trailer.

couple questions:

1. whats the difference between swimming jigs and flipping jigs?  is it just the head shape?

2. And when you swim a jig is it just like a spinner bait,  where you can go anywhere in the water column, or are you just trying to run it on the ground like a fleeing craw?

couple answers:

1.The head, hook, and brushguard can all be different on a swimjig.

2.You can use it any depth but is mostly used in under 6 ft or so. It can immitate a craw or baitfish.

That about sums it up.

It's just a different look. I fish it anywhere I would normally fish a spinner bait. Don't be afraid to mix up your retrieve. There are times I'll kill it near cover and fish it like a typical jig and other times I can't work it fast enough.

Here are my favorite colors:

I think the Rage chunk is best trailer for swimming a jig. Great action.
