Looking at the Dobyns champ  crank 6'10 MH mod fast.685.  I have always been told Fast or XH for topwater but figure the same principal applies to tops as is does for cranks, gives it time for the fish to pop bait under water so you wont miss. Any way  got a good lure rating. Whats your opinions on it? Will be using spooks, gunfish, poppers and devils horses

I'm a big advocate on a moderate action for crankbaits but not for topwaters. I prefer an XF tip for topwaters. It allows you to work the bait more efficiently and accurately.

 

the 685 would be a good stick for your walking type baits and larger poppers. may be a little rough tossing smaller 1/4oz poppers but it will get you by.

 

the 68X is 6'8, not 6'10 btw. 

sorry been looking at so many rods, thought it was 6'8 so you like the XF, but your saying it would be good for what I wanna do, I only 3 1/4 oz anyway and use a 6'6 spinning if i do use them, most of my stuff is 3/8, 1/2 and even a  few 3/4

not really dead set, just a got lure rating a litle over an ounce, full handle, and I hear dobyns alot. my sellus is a MHXF 6'8 and even holding a ounce rating, it it s a hella bend on rod for a 3/4 spook.  may look at a loomis,but hate to pay that much for a rod that well, doesn't really need to be that sensitive

Look into the 733C as a option, I currently use the DX743 for spooks and could not be happier. All 3 will work great SS733,733C,DX743. I chose the 743 as I find it has that faster tip I want for working top waters, the champion and savvy series are a tad slower. The 704cb gets all my other topwater work.

 

I like a moderate action for all topwaters except frogs. The BPS crankin' stick is a good budget option. A 7' M for lighter poppers, and the 7' MH for heavier poppers and walking baits.

For topwater rods I use a "popping" blank which has a fast, but softer tip. To slow of an action and you may find yourself moving the bait further with each twitch than you intend. The moderate action helps keep you hooked up but you have to get the bites first so I concentrate on the presenation.

Since you mentioned Loomis you may want to look at this one....SMR 702C -TW. This rod is a real sleeper, short with a lot of backbone and will launch the baits you want to throw.                               11422-01               

After 30 years or so of throwing spooks on my old all star bcm 6 and the Zell Rowland TWS I tried the Orochi FSS. Just a great topwater rod.Great caster, Good tip and enough power to move fish in a hurry. Also throw the Dog x , Pop r's.,sammy's ect.

Nice, I have the same rod and love it.  I haven't thought about using it for spooks because I thought it might be too long for walking.  Do you snap the tip down or sideways?

I work the tip down and have not had any problems but that also may be because I come in at 6'3"

That explains it...I'm 5' 10".  Great rod though.  I just got it over Christmas and it's my go to senko, light t-rig rod.

they offer the crankin stick in 7' in fast and xfast tips....which is your preference? I actually bought the 7'6" MH xf and have yet to throw it.
