A Few Carolina Rig Questions

Featured Replies

Im gonna go out today and try out a C-rig. Never thrown one in my life. I need some tips from you guys.

I fish from the bank, in ponds that are probably no deeper than 5-6 feet. Would this still be an effective method of catching fish? Also, i know your supposed to drag the bait back to you, but are you guys reeling in all in one motion or pausing at certain points in the retrieve?

The C-rig should work just fine. There are a few different techniques that will work with the C-rig and different people have their own preferences. I usually fish with a sweep, pause, reel out the slack, rinse repeat technique. Lizards and creatures get most of the heavy lifting.

If you're banking fish /w a carolina rig, it's a pretty basic presentation. cast it out, drag it back.  you'll find all sorts of different structure and cover you probably didn't know was down there, too.

Thanks guys. Thats what I was lookin for. I appreciate the quick replies also. I'll probably try it out with a brush hog.

I would use a lighter weight than normal if you are throwing from bank. I would stick with 1/4-1/2 oz instead of 3/4-1oz.

Many people have the wrong idea that C-rigging is just for deep water, I understand why, all the literature you find and videos you see in practical terms mean that. However, in bass fishing there are no absolutes, I caught my first bass ever by fishing a C-rigged Rapala Original Minnow, size 5 color silver black back, in less than 3 ft of water ! Actually I still have that lure.

Good for you that ask and don´t discard "crazy" ideas right away, a big bunch of techniques, rigging methods, baits and such we take for granted today were invented by people that ask: WHAT IF ? .....

All great responses. A guide told me that women out fish men in his boat when c-rigging because women are more patient and fish it slow. Rod tip down and to the side, drag in 1 to 2 feet pulls. Reel up slack and wait a little bit. A lot of hits are on the pause or the first movement after a pause. I've never had a problem getting bit on a c-rig but landing them is another story...lol. On the bite, keeping line tight, reel fast till rod is pointed toward fish and as soon as rod starts to load sweep rod back not up and crank hard. I rarely go heavier than 1/2 oz and I drag out to 20-25 feet.

Thanks for the responses guys. I threw one earlier with no luck. Its a technique I def. want to work on since its doing nothing but getting hotter down here in the South. Does the bite feel like an ordinary worm bite?

It's how the Carolina rig is setup so it can be used in many different presentations. I use a brass bullet weight with a brass clicker. The clicker can be a brass bead, a quake weight, or the cylindrical clicker. I use the adjustable carolina keepers to adjust my 24" leader. Most of the time I use the full 24" leader.

Presentations,

With senkos and brushogs.

Cast it out snug the line, watch the rod tip for a nibble as it falls. Once it hits the bottom I repeat it by reel the line lower the rod then raise up the rod tip and let it free fall again. Repeat etc.

Cast it out snug the line and twitch the rod to 2" or so just enough to make the rattle click. Repeat etc.

With a worm

I cast it out let it sit, for minutes, pull it about 3 - 4" let it sit, etc. It's a slow process.

I never slow reel it.

You want a heavy enough weight to maintain contact with the bottom , from the bank you could start with a 3/8oz. steel egg sinker from WM (also buy 1/2oz. size too) . Drag 2 to 3 feet then stop , reel in slack line and repeat ...this time of year you don't want more than a short 2 ~ 3 second pause between reeling slack line and dragging ...keep it moving in a steady cadence while maintaing contact with the weight on the bottom . If you want to stroke or hop a bait - go with a T-Rig instead .

Since the plastic is essentially free-floating behind the weight, the bite can feel different. Sometimes you'll get a distinctive tap, sometimes it'll feel like you just contact with it, and sometimes like me you'll just look up and realize the worm has moved from where you left it :)
