Soft Plastic Toads

Featured Replies

I know there are a few recent topics on here concerning frog fishing.. Some of which I believe I have input in, but I started this one in regards to soft plastic toads as apposed to hollow bodies.

The ponds I fish in my area are neighborhood ponds, with very little visable structure, grass lines, etc. I have caught one single fish about a month back on a hollow body, and it was walking it along a bank line. I have very little to no confidence in hollow bodies.. Just not my thing. So I went out a few weeks ago, and picked up a pack of Stanley Ribbits, and actually havent tried them out a whole lot since I got em. Im a sucker for anything Rage Tail, so I wanna pick up some of the toads to throw around..

My question to you guys is; Are the Toads basically a "subtle" buzzbait? Iv had tons of success already this year with spooks, but have thrown them so much lately, Im wanting a change. I have confidence in buzzbaits, which have landed me some great fish in the past, but this year it seems like theyre not wanting to cooperate with my offering of a buzzbait. I figure I can work the Toad in the same manner as a buzzbait, and they might love it just for the simple fact that its not quite as noisy and obnoxious on those calm water days. Whats your opinions? I know theyre are a few people on here that love the soft plastic toads.

I fish frogs everyday year round at certain times during the day. I also use more soft body than hollow. I like Stanley and strike king for fast action. I also like zman for slower presentation because they float and you can stop and start at will.

The Zman toad sounds tempting. Which of the three would you say you use the most?

I just bought some Zman and haven't used them yet. Be careful though, people say they will melt to other plastics, so keep them separate.

It's between the Stanley and Zman. They have totally different actions.

I consider them to be. Ribbits have been my choice for years, while a friend does very well on Horny Toads. They can be fished in open water as well as among the weeds.

Yes, 'subtle buzzbait' is a good description, in fact many anglers refer to solid toads as "buzz frogs".

There are a couple of solid toads that stay afloat when paused, but they don't float as high as hollow frogs.

Examples of floating toads are the Ribbit floating toad & Sizmic floating toad.

For the most part though, a solid toad is retrieved nonstop and offers better area coverage,

while a hollow frog can be worked indefinitely in the strike window to coerce a strike (both have their place).

I use a zoom horny toad like a buzz bait in open water and like a frog in heavy cover. Sometimes the fish like it burned over the grass and sometimes they like it slow

5/0 or 6/0 SCREW in EWG hook (I can't remember which size I have to be honest but I rig these /w the hook almost to the butt end. you want a little "bow" in the belly to ensure the bait runs right side up.)

Rage Toad

Parallel shore line

Hold on

You will get strikes from these things in the most nonsensical places

Rage Toads are some ridiculously good baits that have the durability of wet toilet paper but flat out catch fish.

I rig my horny toads with a 5/0 screw lock ewg but I put the hook between the legs as opposed to through the plastic. My hook up ratio is phenomenal when rigged like this. Also I fish them like a buzzbait along Lilly pad lines

The Stanley Ribbit is my favorite, but the Zoom Horny Toad and the Cane Toad are both top notch baits. I use the Rage Toad, but sometimes it is too aggressive a bait.  If they are slamming the topwater, I will go to the Rage Toad, but will start with the Ribbit 9 times out of 10.
