Crankbait Equipment

Featured Replies

So I have made the decision to learn to fish crankbaits this year.

So I would like to know what everyone's preference is for the following:

Rod Power

Rod Action

Reel Gear Ratio and bait caster or spinning reel

Type of line

What pound test for line

I will be fishing lipless, square bill, shallow and medium depth Crankbaits in a variety of different types of cover.

Thanks,

Here's what I've been using:

Rod Power Medium
Rod Action Moderate
Reel Gear Ratio and bait caster or spinning reel 6.4:1 baicaster
Type of line Mono
What pound test for line 12 pound

To be more specific, I'm using a 6'10" St Croix Mojo Bass Glass rod M/M, and a Lews Tournament Speed Spool 6.4:1

I like a med. heavy, mod fast. Any reel that picks up somewhere between 23 and 27 inches per turn on a full spool. I use both 30 lb. braid, and 15 lb. Sunline Defier mono. The Defier is the bees knees for cranking. I've never used any other line like it. It's so nice to work with I can't even put it into words.

For those you will likely want a 7'0 MM with a 6:x:1 ratio. Fast enough to burn a lipless or square bill but slow enough to get a medium down without over doing it.

I'd use 12 or 14# whatever you want. You aren't trying to break a diving record with those baits. You'll likely want a graphite for throwing lipless and square bills around cover.

Be careful when choosing a medium power moderate action rod if you're not familiar with the rod. They can be soft and whippy. You might be safer with a med heavy, especially if your going to be banging those square bills into cover.

I use a MH-moderate crucial cranking rod with 10# seaguar red label fluorocarbon. I either use my E5 or E6 to crank.

7' medium moderate St Croix Avid BPS PQ 6:4:1 40# pp. Love to fish square bills on it

I've got a setup for shallow cranking and one for medium cranking.

shallow:

Rod: *** *** Black. 6'10 Med Fast

Reel: Shimano Core 101 LH 6:2:1

Line #12 FC Berkley 100%

Medium:

Rod: G Loomis GL2 crankbait. 7' Med Moderate

Reel: Shimano Curado I 201 LH 6:3:1

Line #12 FC Berkley 100%

If you're not go throw deep diving cranks like a 6xd you could use a M. Why you wouldn't go MH-moderate for more versatility I dunno. The extra back bone of a mh would make it easier to rip the bait out of weeds and cover.
