Trimming A Jig Weed Guard

Featured Replies

I just got my order of Siebert jigs and I have no idea what length to trim the weed guard to. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I trim mine right at the tip, or a TINY bit past the tip of the hook.

I dont trim them. I fan it out to make them limber.

Why trim them that makes them stiffer (Think leverage). If you don't want them as stiff cut some strands off at the base.

Personally I just fish them and am a l lot more concerned about weather it needs a Rage Craw or Lobster.

I trim the tip off to make it angle with the profile of the jig and fan it out some to limber them up.  Skirts are what I fear trimming...

Trim at an angle at barb. Never had hookup issues trimming (there is a sex reference in there I'm sure of it)

I am curious about this. I have some 1/4 oz. Siebert jigs. I have trimmed the skirt to a finger-width below the hook bend for a compact jig with nice skirt flare. However the untrimmed weedguard is now significantly longer than the hook and skirt. I wonder if in my case trimming would be a good idea. I suppose I could always take out some strands if the guard ends up being too stiff.

I trim them so they are flush with the barb

Iv never trimmed the weed guard on my jigs. My hookup percentage is pretty good. I may start fanning them out a little though.. Never thought to try it.

If I'm fishing timber, I trim the weed guard at an angle. That stiffens the fibers and I rarely hang the jig on a limb. If I miss a fish, it's due to loss of concentration not the weed guard.  If I'm swimming a jig through or around weed cover, I leave the weed guard length and maybe fan it out a little. If I know ahead of time that I'll be fishing a variety of cover, I'll leave it alone unless it's excessively long to begin with.

How do you fan them, and how do you make it stay.
