I was under the impression that most people traditionally use lower ratio baitcasting reels for spinnerbaits and deep diving crankbaits (apparently not shallow crankbaits).

Is that true?

I don't want to get into a battle about what "used to be considered fast". Just currently. I think KVD said he uses a lower ratio reel to force himself to retrieve slower when using spinnerbaits.

I use 5.3:1 reels for cranks over 10 foot depth and slow rolling spinnerbaits. 6.3:1 for almost everything else except lipless cranks and buzzbaits which i use a 7.1:1

I prefer a 5.1 to work large spinnerbaits Deep

Also for pulling high resistance crankbaits

I have a couple sub-6 ratio reels that I use quite a bit. I use them for, deep cranks, shallow cranks, and jighead+grub. I also use them in the winter to slow crawl spinnerbaits for bass and huge blue cats

Yup, that is true, that way at least for me is the form of not having to worry that I'm reeling in too fast when I turn the handle at a certain pace.

Deep Crank baits and Slow Rolling a Large Spinnerbait, usually deep, but not always.

i just low-gear ratio reels for ALL of my moving bait techniques. i like to fish fast and a low-gear ratio allows me to "fish fast" and still not overwork the lure.

I crank extremely fast normally so I use a slower ratio to force myself to slow my presentation down when fishing moving baits. I fish squarebills with a 5:2:1 and deep cranks with a 4:7:1

Most people like a 6.4 or 7.1 for lipless cranks for example but KVD uses a 5 point something sometimes for his lipless cranks.

I'm surprised at some of y'all saying y'all fish squarebills with a below 6 reel.... I use a 6.4 only.

Use the slower gears for yes cranks, larger spinnerbaits, large swimbaits,  and also for umbrella rigs with blades.  I can crank at normal retrieve speeds but having the slower reel causing my presentation to slow down as well as not where yourself out from the drag of bigger blades and cranks. But most everything else is 6:1 and almost all my flipping/pitching is done with 7:1.
