Jig Paint Problems....

Featured Replies

Ok guys, I have been trying different paints for my jigs and have a question. Recently I bought some of the powder paint to dip my jigs in. It seemed to do very well as far as covering the jig head and having a nice finish. However, the paint container says to heat is for a while once it dries to cure the paint. It said to put the heat on 350 degrees and bake for about 20 minutes. Well, I tried this and the paint started melting all inside the oven. Has anyone else had this problem....or know what I might have done wrong..Thanks in advance!!

yes I have had that happen.  The paint is being applied to thick.  For some reason I have the most problem with the black paint the rest dont seem to do it as bad. :-?

I just put a sheet of aluminum foil under them.  Dont want the ol' lady after me.

I've found it easier and less hassle with the wife if you just spray paint the lead head then epoxy it with devcon epoxy.  it holds up better against chips than the baked on paint and allows you to customize your colors a lot better.  You can also spit out a lot more in a shorter time.

I can't take credit, though.  i saw this trick on Bass Tech.  it works great.

Good luck!

I know they recommend 350 for 20 min. but I think that's a bit too hot for a little too long.  I've been baking them at 200-250 for more like 10-15 min.  It makes a little less of a mess and I think they cure just as well.  Give it a try.  :)

Get yourself a fluid bed to dip in insted of the jar.  You can make your own or you can get a very good one from T.J.'s Tackle.  You will get a lot thinner coverage which will greatly minimize or eliminate the excess melt off problem your experiencing.  Plus it will make your powder go a lot further.  Hope this helps.

Do you have a link?

You bet!  Try www.tjstackle.com  You can also search fluid beds on E-bay.  If you want more extensive info on them, go to www.tackleunderground.com and do a search there under the wire baits section and maybe even the home brew tools section.   I posted a reply to a post there on how I made mine a few months ago.  I have the same user name there as here.  Hope this helps.

Ok, this may sound stupid, but what is a fluid bed?  Does anyone have a pic of one?

DID I see "TACKLEUNDERGROUND" in a above post? Are they back up?  I haven't seen hide or hair of them in months.

as far as tu, I know that I had to change my bookmark for them due to the fact that the changes on the message board changed the link.
