Reel Seat Is Slipping

Featured Replies

As the title says the reel seat on one of my rods is slipping. It gets tight but then if I keep tightening it once it hits a certain point it gets loose again. Bottom line is there anything I can do to fix it?

What rod? Is it spinning or casting? To me it sounds as if the thread in the locking nut is damaged, I'm not sure if there is a way to fix it without a total rebuild.

Yeah it definitely sounds like there is a hairline crack in the lock nut somewhere. I have an d spinning rod that was my dads that does the same thing.

Its not one of my main rods thankfully, but it's a classic bill dance quantum American series. They don't make quality like that anymore and I just hoped it may be something little I could fix

You can try some plumbers tape, see if it adds enough material for the threads to catch.

I would try that.

Duck Tape! JK

It is actually DUCT Tape, Duck Tape is a brand now.

Try putting some sort of tape over the threads and then screw it back on over that, just to see if it holds. If it doesn't you can always set it where you like and tape it down with tennis tape or something of the like - something to think about if you really love the rod.

I had a similar experience with my last Rage rod. There was nothing I could to secure the reel. The epoxy or what ever binding agent they used lost its integrity. Thankfully its a St. Croix. I shipped it back and upgraded to a LTB, problem solved.

Try the plumbers tape and if that does not work then you may try some BLUE loctite 242. It will hold it secure and if you ever need to take it off it should break loose with some force.

Resurrecting this topic.

'89 St Croix Pro Graphite series casting rod.

Bought this for my EX years ago and she broke the seat slot pretty quick...
Years later the rod still resides in my rod rack, fixed it with Q-Bond a couple years ago, worked great... put on a different reel and it broke again... Tried to repair it today and just playing around to see how strong , it broke even worse.

SO..... My question is this .....Is there some kind of 2 piece reel seat kit available ?

I'm not removing the guides, this rod is mint, this was simply St Croix "cheaping out" in the name of saving, what a buck-two-eighty to come up with an economically priced rod using a premier blank ???

I am quite adept at fixing things , I can dremel this off no problem. Ive safely cut off butt ends [cork only] a bunch of times when repairing old St Croix Tennessee handle rods where someone removed the metal slip rings to use tape.

thanks , I appreciate the input..

I had the same problem with one of my favorite skipping rod. I went to three different ones and they said that they couldn't do it. So I asked on this forum and based on recommendation. I went to see this rod builder that lived an hour away and said after looking at it for 2 mins.

"New Nut and some guides will need to be taken off, no problem. See me next week"

One week later, got it back and tested it out, ISSUE is resolved - SCORE !

I've got the same problem with an old casting rod.  When I tighten the reel down it acts like the threads are stripped and will loosen back up.

I took it to a rod builder and he told me that it would be cheaper to buy a new rod than to break down the old one and replace the seat.

I wrapped some felt around a hose clamp and anchored the reel down with that.  Not the prettiest, but it works.

Just came across this thread as I have the cracked nut problem too...the one on my rod that is.

I first glued it with JB weld and let it sit for a couple days with a clamp holding it in place. Then I took heavy waxed whipping thread and tightly wrapped the locking nut multiple times, especially near the open end where the reel foot slides under it, whipping it once I got to the end of the thread. I put on 5-6 separate pieces of thread each time with about 3 feet of thread each time and now it seems solid. I am going to try to find out what finish, polyurethane, shellac, etc. adheres to waxed thread and coat it to strengthen and protect the wraps and lock them in place. I mounted the reel back on the rod and so far this seems like it will work. Have not fished it yet.
