Flippin' A Jig - Braid? Fluoro? Braid + Fluoro Leader???

Featured Replies

Guys, I fish two lakes in Alabama: Neely Henry (Coosa River) and Guntersville (TN River).

What line do you recommend for flippin' a jig? Of course I'll be casting/dragging it some as well.

I currently have 30# Suffix braid spooled up. I recently tried using a 14# fluoro leader and the braid cut through the fluoro on a hookset.

Please advise. Thanks!

Braid for pitching a jig and 16lb floro for dragging a jig.

I'm assuming your flipping into cover and not just flipping into open water of the edge of the boat lol

I use 50lb power pro super slick braid, but suffix 832 or normal power pro are other great choices

Leaders aren't very important flipping because its really a reaction strike, the fish isn't gonna have time to get spooked by your braid.

If you're going to be doing both I would go with 20lb floro

Where I pitch, there is no way I'm gonna tie on a leader.

What knot are you using to tie your leader? I use braid & tie a leader when I feel is necessary.

Either will work fine but braid really shines in the thick stuff...braid however sucks around rocks and around some docks (depending what they are made of) making flouro a better option there...so plan accordingly and catch em!

Since you will be doing both on the same rod, I would use braid. You can always tie on a length of flouro leader for when you are dragging a jig. Not sure what knot you are using that is cutting your leader, but I would try a different knot. I've never had any problems with the double albright.

Braid is going to cut through vegetation much better than flouro will. Never have fished Guntersville but I do know it's known for having a lot of thick grass, which is why I would start with braid.

I've been using a uni knot. So far, I'm getting 50% fluoro answers and 50% braid. The Coosa River is pretty stained, with 1' or less visibility. I do 90% of my fishing here. The rest of my trips are at Guntersville where you can have 2' of visibility.

Try an alberto knot. Never had one fail on me yet.

If I were you I would use straight braid since you are fishing the Coosa River the most, and then tie on a leader whenever you need one.

All braid all the time.

I don't want any "weakness" in my line and that is why I do not use a flouro leader.

For flipping anything in sparse vegetation I use 20# Floro regardless of water clarity.

I want the slack line sensitivity that braid doesn't have.

If flipping in heavy cover it's 65 braid.

I throw 15lb flouro for just about everything jigging.  The only time I change is heavy cover.  Then I go to 50-65lb braid.  I do not throw a leader.   If I had to chose one for all around and I did fish heavier structure I'd probably have to agree with the 20lb flouro.

If you Dare, throw 20 pd. Yozuri Hybrid,

Or.. A high quality FC, soft cover, 50 to 65 braid,

I seen guys in Texas using 100 before (braid), alot of rod breaks too... You just gotta try diffrent stuff, one type of line will more than likely stand out to you.
