Getting A New Reel----Need Advice!

Featured Replies

Ok, so I have a rewards program through the company I work for. They have a couple of nice looking reels on there that I can get completely free, and I'm having trouble deciding on which one to get.

The first is a Abu Garcia Revo Premier HS and the other is a Abu Garcia Revo MGXtreme. Both are great looking reels but I cant honestly choose between the two.

The MGXtreme is a 500 dollar reel and the Premier is a 300 dollar reel. I wouldn't be able to get either of these under normal circumstances but since the company I work for is awesome I can. Is the weight difference between the 2 going a big difference? The MGXtreme is 4.9 ounces and the other is close to 6 I think.

Sorry guys, any information you can give is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I agree, the MGXtreme looks WAAAAAY better. I guess my dilemma is the quality between the two. With the rewards points I have I can.....

Get 2 Revo Premier's if they're isn't a HUGE difference.

Or

Get 1 MGXtreme If the premier's quality isn't that great.

ITS SUCH A HARD DECISION! lol     :P  :P  :D

Thanks again guys!

Worst case, you can probably sell the MGX and get a Premier

I think you will find that both reels are "Quality" and I don't think that should be a concern when looking at $300 & $500 Revo's....If you are a diehard and already have a bunch of rods and reels, go with the $500 model, but if you do not own a baitcasting reel, go with the 2 premiers since you will be happy you did when you realize how nice it is to have "specialty set ups".

You have a good problem, however, I would buy 5-6 reels based on the rewards points you have and get a 4 baitcasting reels like a curado or Lews or Revo for $100-$150, and 2 good spinning reels in the $100 range...Revo's,Shimano, and Daiwa seem to hold value the best, as you can see if looking on Ebay. Okuma and other's make awesome reels but a used $200 Okuma is worth $50 after opening the box.

Thanks for the comments guys. I do already have 2 cheaper Lews Rod/Reel combo deals I got a bass pro for 100 bucks each. I also have a couple of black max's that I don't really care for.

This will be my first "High end reel" that I've ever gotten. Since I fish a local tournament here every Friday night in the summer and every Saturday in the winter I want something that is going to last. I think I'm going to go with the MGXtreme.

About the spinning reel............I have for some reason NEVER been able to use them for bass fishing. I only use them Crappie fishing. For some reason It just doesn't feel right to me. I've tried multiple times and just haven't been able to get use to it. The only thing I use is baitcasters.

Thanks for all the replies!!

The MGX would be an awesome freebie.  I have never been fan of the Premier. I had one of the older versions. I was constantly having issues with it.
