Spinnerbait / Chatterbait New Setup - Help/opinions

Featured Replies

Alright so I have two new setup's I'm working on getting. One of which is a Spinnerbait / Chatterbait setup. The other one is a jig/pitching setup which I already have figured out :) and I went over my budget a bit on that one LOL.

But anyways, I have $300 to spend total on this combo. Break it down any way you'd like! I'm not partial to a particular brand, just give me your reasoning / experience. Also a line recommendation would be great too! What ya got for me? This will be my first spinnerbait/chatter exclusive setup.

Thanks Guys!

Find a sale on a dobyns savvy 734 and get a curado I.

I love a short rod for spinnerbaits, I use a 6' 6" M St Croix Premier with a Speed Spool 6:4:1 and love it, the premier has a semi soft tip so it's great for reaction baits imo

Sensitivity never hurts, but some techniques don't really require a lot.  I think spinnerbaits and chatterbaits fall in that category.  I have a 6' MH Lightning that is dedicated to spinnerbaits.  I think the reason I feel vibrations right from the start of my retrieve with this cheap rod is because of the rod's being so short.  I have 7' and longer rods costing much more that don't give that kind of feedback.  One exception is my IMB 843 Rainshadow RX 7.  This rod also transmits vibration right from the beginning of the retrieve.  The Lightning carries a Daiwa Procaster 100HN...total $48.02 with tax.  The RX 7 carries a Zillion 50 Anniversary........total is a little more than your budget.

I like 12# on my MH rods with Siege being a favorite.  A friend prefers 15# CXX on most rods.

Consider a Tatula for the reel, and talk to Mike at DVT about building you a rod for those specific techniques.  I think it could be done within your budget.

I'd say get a Tatula for 100 and a 7'MH/F St. Croix Avid. I like 30lb braid for spinnerbaits when fishing in cover, and in more open water I like a good quality monofilament or copolymer.

I use a dobyns champion 733 with a curado 201 i. I think the 734 is a bit over powered for me, the 733 loads just right IMO .

I would say the rod depends a lot on what your fishing. Do you fish your chatterbaits/spinnerbaits in a lot of grass and rip them free? Or is it a lot of open water for the most part? If its open water I would go with a glass rod or something with a nice parabolic bend. It will also double as a great hollow belly rod or crankbait rod possibly. If you fish a lot of the grass like I do with mine usually then I like a MH/XF or a F is ok also. I use a heavier line in grass and go lighter out in the open.

For some reason not a lot of people seem to use a glass type rod or something with a really nice parabolic bend unless they are fishing like a crankbait. They really are the deal in open water if you can get away with it depending on the weight of the bait and how much force it takes to drive a hook home. It really reduces the amount of fish that will slam a bait really quick and jerk the rod super hard and by the time you set no one is home .

I would also say blow your load on a rod you like first and then reel second. If you don't have much left after that a Tatula is almost impossible to beat I think. Its a absolute workhorse of a reel.

I use a ALX deputy for 3/8 chatterbaits with a trailer, usually a rage tail shell cracker or menace, and I ise a kistler helium 3 light medium heavy for 3/8 and 1/2 oz spinet baits. Both are rated fast but they have a slower taper than what I consider fast ( I use st croix as a benchmark as that is what I'm used to).

I love both rods but if I had to chose one if choose the deputy, it's te most versatile rod I own.

I also agree with the tatula, it's not just a great reel for the price, it's just a phenomenal reel

I fish bladed jigs (chatterbaits) on occasion  :eyebrows:  I use a 6' 6" MH/F St. Croix LTB with a 6:4.1 Lew's Speed Spool and 15lb Big Game. I know the common perception is sensitivity isn't important with a moving bait, this is not the case IMO. I can't tell you how many times I've caught big bass on bladed jigs, or slow rolling spinnerbaits for that matter, when all I felt was the bait get just a little bit lighter feeling or the blade just didn't seem to be working quite right, or like I picked up a strand of weeds. They'll attack those baits from behind and push them towards you pretty often, which is often the cause of a hard to detect bite. They were doing that to me just a couple weeks ago. Often times the ones that are the barely detectable bites seem to be good fish that have eaten the bait very well, which you can see in several of the pictures on my recent post here.

With the budget you set, a 6' 6" M/F or MH/F would be the rod I'd be looking at. I love that Lew's Speed Spool, seems to be the perfect speed and it fires a bait a mile. To keep it in your price range, I'd go with either an Avid or a 663C Dobyn's Savvy. Ron at Valley Sports could set you up with that Dobyn's and Lew's and you'd be good to go!  :respect-059:
