Double Fluke Rig

Featured Replies

I watched the "how to fish a double fluke rig" video and was wondering how to actually rig it. and when fishing it do the two flukes often tangle?

great thanks man, i'll check that out.

Put a bead between the swivels, this seems to help.

I always tie a palomar with a long tail end. I don't know if this is the correct way of doing things or not.

Knot doesn't matter, so long as it's well tied.  I tie them up with the second fluke on a free sliding swivel, above the the primary bait's swivel.  The leader for the second bait is a little shorter, which helps avoid tangling.

Good point.  Double fluke rig is a variation of a fish finder rig, substituting flukes for weight and hook.

thats exactly how i was thinking to rig it. it makes sence to have the 2nd fluke on the same main line as the 1st. in the video i saw it rigged diffrently witch created a split where the two flukes hung freely, i dislike that way of rigging due to the tangle of the two lines. and I wouldn't say it's the incorrect way, just a diffrent way.

this is also a good way to do it. I'll try both ways out and go with what works best for me.

I haven't fished a double fluke rig much, but is there anything wrong with a 3 way swivel? Of course a very short leader off the 90 degree line tie..

I'm not a 3-way swivel kinda guy, too bulky. I'll use the smallest swivel possible if i can get away with it.

With a 3-way, there's quite a bit of force on it, if you hook up with two fish.  Plus, with two single, one sliding, there's a cool deal, where the sliding on rides up the main line. Start your retrieve, and the main fluke "meets up" with the second.  3-ways seem to be more tangle prone, too.

Yes, I can see you're point there, thanks for the tip..

Not really.  You work it like a jerk bait.  Completely different presentation.

Here is how I rig. No tangles.

Slip swivel on main line.

Tie hook to main line.

Tie leader to swivel

Tie hook to leader.

Swivel is free to slide

I would put a swivel and a leader on the main hook, and have the baits only a couple inches apart.

So, when I tie it, I start by tying up two swivels to two leaders, one a few inches longer. Hooks get tied to the end.  This will allow you to use a Palomar on all connections.  Slide the swivel for the shorter leader up the mainline.  Then tie the longer leader onto the mainline.  Donkey Rig done. ;)

How's that fish BTW..flukes usually jerk side to side.. wouldn't two kinda interfere with each other? Gonna try this either way..

It works just fine and I have fished it countless times. It doesn't even have to be flukes on there. Rig it like J said and it would be almost totally tangle free.

I rig it like most people. It never tangles and I have caught a boat load of fish on it. Most of my fish come on the shorter fluke. I also use flouro so that might help not tangling being a little stiffer.  You can't go wrong.

Ein, it looks like two fish chasing each other.

I first learned this set up from a tarpon fisherman 10 years ago, he called it a drop fly rig.  Fly or small bucktail on top leader and hard or soft jerkbait on bottom.  I've rigged with 2 swivels 1 sliding swivel, 1 swivel and tied the  shorter leader off it, and with no swivels.  Caught fish with it quite a few times, tried it for bass fishing a and it worked with bass too.  Don't know why I don't fish it more often.

i'm going to give the "no swivels" method a try too B) haha

  • Super User

That will tangle....and the baits don't run independently of each other.  I'm sure it will get bit though. ;)

lol then sliding swivel it is. i reallty dont wanna deal with tangle between casts.

  • Super User

A short top leader should not tangle, I don't think leader length is critical, the idea is 2 bait fish.  Using a swivel is much easier to tie it.  Whether it's double fluke rig, fish finder rig, sabiki, chicken rig or drop shot, all are pretty much variations of each other.
