Skirtless Chatterbaits

Featured Replies

Anyone throw a Chatterbait, minus the skirt, plus a trailer?

I saw an article on ***, curious, just want to hear the word on the street first.

I'd probably through it with a BigBites CaneThumper or a RageCraw, depending on this and that.

Yep, I do it all the time with a thin paddle tail bait, like a Beat Shad or Swing Impact. I also do it to buzzbaits and spinnerbaits.

Never really tried it, glad to hear I'm not alone. Is there anytime you'd pick a skirt over not having one?

Not only Chatterbaits but spinnerbaits, remove the skirt insert a big curlytail worm or a paddletail soft plastic swimbait and you got yourself a good sized bettle spin.

Try the rage Bug with or without the skirt.

Yup ... especially this time of year.

Zman actually sells a version without the skirt and it comes with 2 swimbaits and they start small in the 1/4 oz range with 3" swimbaits I think called the Flashback shad or something, and then they have big ones that I think are 3/4 with huge swimbaits in the 6" range, and the swimbaits are actually really nice with a bunch of segments, color patterns, and I am pretty sure they are marketed toward saltwater as all the one's I have are in Saltwater Baitfish colors like Bunker etc. typically used for Stripers.

I have a bunch of Shaky blades that I keep with me but rarely do I add one to a jighead, and I just like fishing spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, and bladed swim jigs with skirts, I don't know why I would remove the skirt, I feel like I wouldn't have the confidence I normally would have....I have never actually tried the one's I have because the ZMan/Renosky models are old and very cheap so I don't trust them from breaking at the snap or hook bending etc...

A skirtless chatterbait with a keitech swing impact, or swing fat impact is a great bait to throw.

Just to clarify, the article on *** wasn't about the Chatterbait, it was about the new SK Naked Rage Blade and Rage Minnow combo.  It comes without a skirt and has clear lip, it's meant to be fished without a skirt.  The Rage Minnow is the recommended trailer.

Fishing a Chatterbait without a skirt is certainly effective but the Naked Rage Blade is designed to be fished skirtless with that specific trailer and has a much different design than a Chatterbait.

Brett Hite has made a killing on the pro tour using chatterbaits without skirts.  I know they've had articles in the past on it, check those out
