Benefits Of Supertuning?

Featured Replies

Is supertuning worth it? I was thinking of getting the supertune service from dvt. Bearings, clean and lube and carbontex drag washers.

I just got my supertuned and it is on the way back, he said it freespoles way better now

Dvt ^^^

Yep!!!!

How much does it cost and how much does it really help? I have thought about trying it on a baitcater to get longer casts. If I could get an extra 20 feet that would be worth it for sure.

It depends on the reel you want to super tune. Lets say I got a Chronarch 51E and a Met13 tuned, you'd get more results in casting distance and smoothness from the Chronarch.

Bearings cleaned and lubed with a low viscosity oil, check.  Carbontex drag, check.  Brake drum cleaned and lightly oiled, check.  Supertuning?  Guess it depends on how much is done and the effect it has on your particular reel model.  I don't expect night/day difference and if it does, it might make your reel too fast for you to cast reliably.  Worth a shot if you just want to experiment but I'd ask DVT what to expect in added performance.

Consider:  If something will get you 10 extra feet of casting distance, that's the same as keeping your foot on the trolling motor for an extra 2 seconds.

But I understand the urge for guys to "hotrod" anything they own, from cars to fishing reels.  Sometimes it's more emotional than practical.

Supertuning isn't necessarily an upgrade, as much as a refinement. Casting distance may increase slightly, but casting ease will be greatly improved. That is, same distance with less efort. Retrieve will be more connected and much smoother. The drag washers are the biggest upgrade. It will start easier, pull smoother, and have a higher stopping power; over a stock drag. Whether it's worth it, is up to you. Most newer reels are plenty good enough, but if you want your reel to be a little better, Supertuning is a relatively cheap way to improve it.

Contrary to what you first imagine a tuned reel will backlash less because the spool starts up more easily with less force. I'm not making any of the wild claims some do but I think on solid spool shaft reels the extra $12 for super tuning ($34 including clean n lube) is a reasonable investment. The biggest advantage is proved accuracy from easier casting. I'm happy to discuss individual circumstances if you pm email or call. Remember members here get 10% off labor too.

I agree with Mike.  Supertuning reduces backlashing as long as you are practicing good casting technique.  I have several supertuned reels, and can run all with fewer brakes than factory reels...even other reels of the same model.  That isn't to say that I can't still backlash them cuz I can.  Proved that today trying to bomb 3/16 oz. in strong winds.  Luckily I didn't need to do more than pull out loose coils.

I'm getting a little better distance with the supertuned Curado 51E versus the cleaned Curado 51E, but couldn't say how much.  I need to locate some practice plugs so I can make some measurements on dry land.  I've got a supertuned Fuego I could pit against a factory Fuego, but never have had them out at the same time so no idea if one is slightly better than the other at long casts.  From what I've been told, a Shimano benefits more from a supertune than a Daiwa.

I have a couple supertuned Curado 200B's that get an easy extra 10 yards after supertuning, if not more. Now almost every baitcaster I own is supertuned.

Supertuning isn't necessarily an upgrade, as much as a refinement.

Not everyone will appreciate the difference, it depends a lot on what you are starting with.

I have had several "perfectly good" reels supertuned and the difference is stunning.
