At the moment i'm using my medium heavy moderately fast 7 foot berkley lightning rod for cranking. I hear a lot of talk about how you should use medium power rods to crank. I find that if you get a medium heavy with a mod/moderately fast tip you shouldn't have a problem cranking. I've never ripped a hook out of a fishes mouth, does anyone else crank with rods of higher power than medium?

 

I think too many fishermen do what they're told and not what they feel.

Uhhh, generally what you see recommended is a power that handles the weight of the bait, not some general medium recommendation.  I have six rods to throw cranks, two are MH, and another is actually a heavy power.  One of mine is even a fast action.  Depends on what you're doing with them, and it depends on the model....

any moderate action will be good for cranking, you choose the power depending on the weight of the plug you are using.

I use a medium for smaller cranks, and MH for larger cranks. Anything running less than 6' normally gets the medium power. Anything deeper gets the MH. 

 

If I'm around heavy cover (weeds/wood), I use the MH.

I have 1 medium, 1 mh, 4 Heavies, and 1 XH Crankin rods!

A lot of guys will use a medium powered rod in a fast action for crankbaits because the medium power has more forgiveness to it. If you are using a crank specific rod with a slow action then a MH is fine, I have 3 different models, I have a 6'6" ML-M for what I call finesse cranking, then I have a 7' M-M and a 7' MH-M not to mention a 6'10" MH-MFI use when I only take a few rods with.

I have a medium powered cranking rod and a MH and for me the MH does the trick for most of the baits I like to throw.  But I do have a MH Fast rod that is more sensitive, that I use when the fish are biting light or soft.

I use a MH crankin' stick from BPS for my spinnerbaits and it works great. The MH' 7'11" is fantastic for big deep divers.

I'll hopefully be able to put a 7-11 MH cranking rod from Pinnacle through it's paces before everything freezes.

I fish cranks with up to my MBR784 and that rod is a friggin pool cue, never had a problem with fish coming loose. I once owned a crankbait specific rod, a Kistler Mag TS crankbait series, it was a good rod but .... I felt it lacked of enough power.

i feel you man, i've felt a lot of cranking rods that dont have the amount of power i'd like them to. thats why I ushually use a medium heavy.

yea man i find that when you use a medium heavy stick to crank it also handles spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and buzzbaits pretty well.

i feel you man, i've felt a lot of cranking rods that dont have the amount of power i'd like them to. thats why I ushually use a medium heavy.

 

The problem for me is that medium rods don´t have enough power to cast a big momma crankbait, I don´t cast 3/4 oz cranks a lot but when I do I want at least one of my rods being able to handle the weight properly. I really liked the way the Kistler worked but they didn´t make a MH I didn´t like  other things about the rod but to those you add the power not being enough ----> cya !.

 

I´ve been thinking about getting me another crankbait rod, the GLoomis new GL2 line has a MH crankbait ( please do not recommend me another brand ) but from thinking to actually purchasing is still to be seen.
