What grain bullet does everyone shoot? I've read loads about the 55 grain expanding better but the 62 grain penetrating better. What do you prefer?

Most 5.56 guns tend to shoot better with 62 grain bullets.

1:7 twist is better with 62 grain and up.  1:9 twist shoots better with the lighter grains 55 and under.

Your accuracy may not relate to the the bullet weight/rifling twist as you might expect it to.  I have a Colt Sporter HBAR with a 1:7 twist that shoots stunning groups with 52gr. HP match bullets, but I could not work up a single load for the longer, heavier bullets that would shoot worth a darn.

My 223/5.56 is 1:9 twist and shoots the snot out of 55 grain.  Just sayin

Thanks for all the insight guys. I'm trying to stay away from the green tip I shoot all the time at work but it looks like that may be my best option for bulk buying

What are the Green tip?

You can get the regular pmc for less than the green tip if that is what you are talking about.

I'm referring to the green tip that is used by the military. I've just seen too much of it malfunction to spend my own money it.

Ok, I didn't know if you were talking about the military SS109 or the Zombie ammo. The 109 is FMJ and obviously won't expand. If your looking for something that will I like the 55g Hornady V-max. I don't buy factory ammo but I think it's fairly easy to find.

As far as a good plinking ammo I'd buy whatever has the best price.

I have a case of 7N6 5.45 x 39 laying around so I just got done building an AR to shoot it. Once I got the Ridle built I realized the BATF banned the import of the 7n6 saying its Armor Piercing.

I just picked up 2k more rounds of 62gr HP.

I shoot 62grn. out of a 1:9 twist newer Mini-14 Ranch rifle and it's good enough. I am not shooting matches with it, and I can hit my target from as far away as I can see it with the iron sights. I am sure it would/could shoot better if I could shoot better.

Theoretically yes.  The faster the twist the heavier the bullet.  Most varmint 223 rem's are around 1-12 for lighter bullets then your 1-7 are for heavier bullets.  Like anything else you need to try it but if it was me I'd start with the 62's.  55's tend to be easier around here to find and sometimes cheaper.

Totally agree.  I have a 1:7 twist PSA and shoot 55 grain all day because it's easy to find.  But I don't try to snipe at 300 yard with it either lol

Keep in mind a 1/9 will stabilize a lot more than just 55 or 62g. I used to have a 24" AR that I shot benchrest. It had a 1/7 and I shot some 80g vld match kings out of it with good accuracy at 200yds.

The bad thing was that load was longer than mag length and had to be loaded singely. I ended up rebareling it to 6mm ppc

I shoot Tulammo in 55 grain for 23 cents a piece at the range with no problems and decent groups.
