Bass With Smaller Mouths Than Others Why?

I was going through my pics on my phone and noticed something about the fish that a buddy and I have caught out of this one spot. We have caught fish out of there from 4-9lbs and all of them have small mouths compared to similar fish caught out of different spots.

Does anyone know why this is? I would just go with genetics but didn't know if there was more to it.

Glad you asked this because I see the same thing on my home lake. I have caught fish that were the same length & weight, but one will have a significantly larger mouth than the other. This seems most noticeable in fish in the 12-14 inch range. My two guesses were:

1) Male fish vs. female fish;

2) Different year classes, the younger fish having the smaller mouth.

Have no idea if either of those two guesses have any potential to be true.

No clue, but my guess would be that larger mouth = older fish.

Likey a larger mouth indicates an older fish that is not feeding as well, thus the trimmer body.

My thoughts too.

Ditto that. Have experienced similar at my fishing spots.

Caught some absolute beasts with gaping maws but were

strangely thin, while catching heavier fish with smaller maws.

Why do so humans have larger mouths than other?

They just do ;)

Reminds me of a mount that I saw in the office of a local business....I went there to shop and couldnt help but gawk at this stud bass mount....This largemouth was 18 3/4 inches long and 6lbs 2 ounces....You talk about a beautifully proportioned fish. Like a football! not a hanging down gut, just a stout dude....I talk to the man that caught the fish and he gave me the blow by blow of where he caught the fish , what lure he used , and it was as if I was there on this little out of the way small Minnesota lake with him.....Gives me shivers just thinking about it....Many different combinations of weight vs lenght formulas.

Faster vs slower growing bass will have smaller mouths, you could have a old big male bass near 4 lbs with the same size head as a faster growing female 9 lbs for example.

There are runts and giants is all species.

Is that what she's been telling you?

Yes - and she also says she'll shoot me for much less than $12 . . . .

There are different kinds of bass. Besides small mouths and large mouths. In my rivers that I fish the bass have more of a greener color wise. A smaller mouth too.

It is because the bass with the smaller mouths are males.

The bass with the bigger mouths are female so they can b***h at the males and complain better.

I have read somewhere it's something to do with genetics like a pure read hunting dog as the capability to grow larger than a mut. I beleive it has to do with the fishes capable weight especially for smaller fish
