So how do you organize or remember what each crank you own dives to.  I know Glenn said on one of his videos that he takes a sharpie and simply writes it on the bottom, curious what others do.  Do you organize your storage box in a certain way?

Years ago used a sharpie on the bill to help remember approx. depth I don't now, after a while you learn about bill angles and such.. Most Rapalas have this info in the molds..( diving bill )

I put all squarebills in storage containers, md, dd, etc... Then I have what is called " go fast " containers with a variety of crankbaits...

Label makers to mark your storage boxes is also something you may consider...

I only carry the ones I remember... lately it seems my selection is dwindling.

I use a sharpie and write the "book" diving depth on the left, rear of the bait.  I used to write it on the diving bill but it didn't seem to last long there. The rear of the bait usually gets beat-up somewhat less than the lip and front of the bait (not counting hook rash).

 

For storage - I separate the cranks by depth: 0-9ft / 7-16ft / 15-20ft / >20ft.

I was thinking about breaking it down as you have said - shallow, med, deep, or similar.  I am starting to build up my crank collection and until recently hasn't been to much of a problem but with all the companies and colors I am starting to lose track. 

 

I am not at the point where I can really tell by the bill shape/length alone, but I think with some attention to it in the future wouldn't be too hard to pick up.

I definitely use Glenn's tip with the sharpie.  Mine are organized in plano boxes by depth:

 

Deep - 12+

Mid - 6-12

Shallow - 0-6

You should be able to remember the depth they dive to!

I find a flat area at say 15' cast the deep diver 40+ yards and troll it until it hits bottom. If it hits, move out to 18 feet and repeat, few if any deep diver will hit bottom at 18 to 20 feet regardless of the propaganda the lure makers claim. Very few lures to remember.

I carry spro almost exclusively. Just looking at em I can tell their depth.

I mostly only use one brand of cranks (Strike King) so it's pretty easy to remember. They cover my needs well. The only other brand/line I have/use are the Storm Arashi's, they are easy to tell just by looking at them.

x2. This has seemed to work well for me over the past couple of years.

I use Rapala DT's in Falcon FTO crankbait boxes. It's so idiot proof that even I can't screw it up.

I have a bunch of different brands for my mid range cranks. I basically stick to bomber square a's and jointed rapalas for my shallow work. And strike king and Norman for my deep divers. I used to use a sharpie to write the diving depths on the bottom of the crank right where the bill meets the bait but now I just have a shallow box (0-6), medium box (7-13), and a deep box (14+). It's worked well for me so far.

Most you can get a pretty good idea just by looking at them. More and more companies are printing the depth on their baits somewhere so make sure to look your bait over and see if it isn't already there for you. 

Two ways.

 

The first, as described above, is to take a Sharpie and write your code to parallel the depth of the crankbait.

 

The second is to familiarize yourself with the size and shape of the bill so you will know how deep they dive.

 

The second method takes some time as you get familiar with your crankbaits over the years.

The more you use them the easier it is to tell about how deep they'll dive. I've got mine separated by diving depth in different boxes. 0'-5', 6'-12', and everything over that is in one box. I also use a lot of DT cranks so that's kind of cheating haha. 

Mine are all organized in different boxes like this:

 

Shap raps (I know these just from looking at them)

Squarebills

Shallow (1-6 feet)

Mid (7-12 feet)

Deep (13+ feet)

Walleye/Trolling

 

Some of my deep divers may run 14 feet, some of them may run 22 feet. Most of them I know what they run, but if I don't, I can usually figure it out just by the bill and weight of the lure. If if that doesn't work, it doesn't take long to throw something and see if its hitting the bottom or not in whatever depth I'm in.
