Help Me Pair A Light St Croix Spinning Rod With A Reel

Featured Replies

I'm pretty set on my next rod being either a 6'6" Premier or Avid Light power spin rod (PS66LF2 and AVS66LF2).

It will be mainly used for white bass, panfish, and trout.

I need help pairing it with a good reel under $99! Thanks.

Pretty tough to beat a Pfluegar President in the under $100 range. I'd probably be looking at the 25 size in your situation.

I use that size on a light, but it doesn't have to be a Pflueger or any other brand.   What it has to be is comfortable in your hand as it's a small reel, the knob or paddle should be to your liking as well.

1000, 10, 20, or 2000 in size

So many good spinning reel in the 100 price point

Thanks for the reel suggestions everyone. Another question: I was wondering if this light rod would be suitable for swimbaits? Would be mostly 1/8 ounce weighted offset hooks with 3.8" keitech swimbaits.

Can be done (with difficulty). You will want a Medium-Med-Heavy power rod for that. I have a Premier 6'6'' L/F and it is a perfect rod for targeting big resident brown trout on small creeks. For a reel, a Shimano Sahara 500 or 1000 FE would be a great match.

This would depend on the over all weight of the lure.  If you can cast without having to "lob" then there shouldn't be a problem.  Many rods can exceed the max lure weight, it's a matter of whether yours will.  There is always the option of buying lures that will conform to your rod specs.

For 60 bucks I bought a Pflueger President spinning reel, mostly for trout/salmon and the occasion catfish outing. It handles fantastically, I've never had any issues and is easily the smoothest reel for the dollar I've ever bought.
