Old Wiggle Wart

Featured Replies

I found an old wiggle wart at a yard sale. Im pretty sure its an old one. It says wiggle wart on the bottom of the lip. All I know is these are good baits that arent made the same anymore. I put new hooks on it and caught a few 2lbers on it. I was under the impression it was an early spring cold water bait, but I cant help but notice how wide the wobble is. Doesnt this contradict cold water crankin' rules? Can anyone help explain this phenomenon? Or even the "old wiggle wart" phenomenon it self? What make them so good? Whats different on the new ones?

Wiggle warts do have a very wide wobble and this does contradict cold water cranking. I can't explain why it works but it's either a super narrow wobble or a wide wobble in the spring from what I've noticed. And the old ones are so much better because they didn't run true and they hunted around in the water. When Rapala bought them they "fixed" them so they ran true and now everyone wants the old ones. I have a few and they are my prized possessions!! Don't ever let yours go!

Is there any other old baits that are no longer being made that have a reputation like the wiggle wart? Im intrigued by the idea of fishing with something I know you cant just go get a BPS.

The 2000-2005 Megabass 110 are soposed to fish better than the new ones.

I bought a couple of new warts this year as I am getting into medium and deep cranking and my dad said he might have some laying around in the basement.

I found 14 pre rapala wiggle warts. All had rusted hooks and some had chipped paint but cleaned them up, replace the hooks and good to go. Excited to try them out.

The Xcaliber rattlebaits are supposedly being discontinued and are very popular. It's my understanding they're just being rebranded and will be back on the market shortly, just in a new package. In the meantime, guys are running around screaming the sky is falling and buying a $7 bait for upwards of $35 apiece. If it gets worse I'll be putting mine up for sale.

The Vixen is another discontinued bait that goes for a ton.

I only have two old wiggle warts left. One without a rattle or a stuck rattle and a large one I found snagged . I need to to replace the hooks on it .

Is it bad that I noticed the Metanium DC first?

Lil pig! Nice one. What was the water temp?

The surface water temp was actually a sizzling 54 when I caught that bass. But, my point is that I fish Warts anytime I think I can get a crankbait bite, say down to 40 degrees.  My records show that my coldest Wart fish was at 42.  When  water temps are in the 30s, I'm generally not in a boat but fishing off the bank so I'm not using crankbaits then but who knows, perhaps Warts would still be catching in 30 degree temps.

Well, that photo was taken to illustrate my Met DC review thread over in the Rod/Reel/Line forum so it was meant to showcase the reel as much as the bass...
