Braid For Frog Fishing

Sufix performance braid 50 or 65lb

Interesting! I've caught some very respectable largemouths in thick slop with a frog and similar top water baits. Been doing this since the early 80's with my first Bill Plummer Bass Frog! Back in the early days we only used dacron or heavy monofilament. Now a days I use 30# test PP or 20# Fireline. Largest LM I pulled out of the slop was just shy of 7 lbs., back about 10 years ago, on the 30# PP. Did not have a problem getting that fish out with that size line. And I had a lot of weeds covering the bass as well when I pulled her over the gunnels. As a matter of fact, I'd like to see someone break 30# PP with rod & reel. I really don't think it can be done. Why then use the 50 - 65 pound tests braids advocated by a large majority of bass fishermen? I've never found a need to go that heavy myself.

Pretty much any braid will do good for topwater....it floats. Pick a brand and see how you like it. As for my recommendation, I like Sufix 832, and really most any 8-carrier braid. It's quieter and seems to cast a little better.

I use 50 lb Berkley Professional Braid or 50 lb Power Pro.

Braid is over engineered, so really any 40-50# line will work.  I like 50# Power Pro for frogs.

Kite string will work just fine!  Seems like we were just talking about this, every other day!!! :)

Power pro is what I like as well. Last year I tried #65 on one of my set ups for the first time after I had some left over from spooling my musky rod and it worked fine for frogs and stuff.

50lb suffix performance braid. And as much as I love 832, I would not recommend it for frogging as it sinks and works very very poorly for frogs.

I use power pro 50 pound braid in fairly sparse cover and 65 pound in the real thick stuff.

Powerpro 50lbs. Has never let me down.

Same here...it has however cut my fingers a few times lol

I realize that we're starting to sound like a broken record but... here's another happy 50# Power Pro user. I've tried 65# and it works but I just prefer 50#.

30# Power Pro Super Slick, really anything heavier than that is not necessary.

The next time I fill the frog spool I'm pretty sure it will be with 40# smackdown.

No Samurai love?? 50# Samurai for me, with FX2 a close second.

832 braid and I'm one of those guys who feel that 30 or 40lb will get the job done.  Just remember to get yourself some line conditioner and treat your braid before you go fishing.  It helps.

I use 15# for bass and 20# for snakehead, I'm using spinning so need for a heavy braid.
