Need A New Spinning Rod! Help.

Recommended Posts

Broke my spinning rod today on a very small fish. Looking to buy a new one. I really only use the spinning set up for drop shot. Anything over $100 is too much for me. I really don't know much about rods so I'm counting on good responses, which i'm sure I will get.

Thanks

I don't know if this rod would be good for drop shots but I really like my Fenwick hmg spinning rods.  I have two of them and they are $100.00

Sensitivity is a relative to you personally. One rod might be super sensitive to one guy but dead to the next. Sensitive rods can also be had for all sorts of prices. For what you're looking for I'd recommend the H2O Xpress Ethos 7'3" ML for $60. I have 3 Ethos and I love them. They're easily my favorite rod under $100, and to me they're more sensitive than my Vendetta, and about on par with my Veritas 2.0. The Vendetta's are also a good rod. However, I can't recommend the new Veritas 2.0. An insert (second from bottom) popped out of mine the second time I used it. Before I had even caught a fish on it. I know a lot of people who experienced this problem as well, so it's a pretty big thing apparently.

If you are going to be using it for dropshotting, you won't need an expensive rod. Most any rod that is medium or medium light powered will do. Most any fish that bite your lure on your dropshot, you'll know it.

I have a Berkley Lightning Shock 7' M spinning rod that I use for dropshots. Everytime something bites, the tip is soft enough that it gets tugged down...and I set the hook.

If you can get to a Bass Pro, try out the new

white Carbonlites, I've become a big fan. They

are light, strong, and very sensitive.

As well, a Bass Pro will have a ton of rods you

can try your reel out on. Yep, bring it in and they

will let you try it.

Ultimately, you are the final arbiter of what feels

best to you. We all have favorites, but what will

become your next fav is up to you. Good luck.

If you can wait for a Memorial Day sale in the next 3 weeks you'll get a better rod than what you would now or you'll save some money. My recommendation is to wait for the sale and go to Cabela's and there you can get either a Fish Eagle 50 7' medium light, fast action spinning rod or the Tournament ZX Bass spinning rod in the drop shot specific model which is 7' medium power with an extra fast action. Right now the Fish Eagle 50 is $90 and the Tournament ZX is right at $100, but if you wait for the sale you can probably pick either one of those up for $70 and they are both nice rods. The Tournament ZX has got high marks from a lot of anglers that I respect and everyone seems to really like the Winn grips ( grips found on golf clubs), and the Fish Eagle has always been a really good rod, it isn't going to win any design awards but it will give you good all around performance. I know this as I had a 6' medium power Fish Eagle casting rod I got as a back up and loaner and I ended up never loaning it as it became my backup jerkbait rod and my primary popper rod until I gifted it to my neighbor's son to use with his first casting reel.

Definitely agree with the Fenwick Elite Tech smallmouth.  Great rod.  Light, sensitive, comfortable, all around awesome.  They are discontinued, but can still be found out there.  Get one while you can.

This may sound like blasphemy but I bought an Ugly Stick Elite spinning rod in a MHF 6'6" as a bigger baits/mini frogs rod for my kid and I actually really like it having used it a bunch.  Lots of beefy backbone on it but a nice soft tip that lets you whip all kinds of smaller baits really well.  Works great with 20# 832 braid for just about everything from T rigged plastics to smaller swimbaits to spinners etc.  Since you're a Drop Shotter, go with a Medium, but I'd say especially with the soft tip section it would make a great DS rod.

If I was only getting one rod, and it had to be a spinning rod and $100 is out of reach, that is probably the best rod I can think of that I've actually used.  I hated just about every other rod at that range.  Even the Berkley Amp rods are just ok IMO.  For $20 more the Ugly Elite is a big step up IMO (and yes I have both, bought them for the boy)

Hello, Gander Mountain has their tournament series spinning rods on sale right now for $60. I have never tried them but they feel pretty nice and had a good selection of sizes and actions. Chris.
