Huddleston Swimbait Questions

Featured Replies

Hey guys I am looking to getting into swimbaits and I want to try some Huddleston baits. I live in Central Florida and I know that many of the Huddleston baits are designed to imitate trout that we do not have here in Florida. Has anyone in Florida had success with Huddleston baits, if so what colors? Also any rigging tips would be great!

Doesn't matter about the lack of trout - might consider the weedless hudds in some of your lakes

Another option is the real prey pond shiner. Perfect for Florida

Also, the smaller shad come in golden shiner color, as well as the 6". Not from FL, but I don't think it matters. I fish a lot of waters that don't have trout, and it's still an effective bait.

+1 on the Real Prey too.

So in the waters that do not have trout what colors do you fish? Just anything?

Trout.

Trout colors (shasta, rainbow) mostly, but also silver, and hitch in the 8". 6"(and 68) mostly I match forage, perch or shad. For you in FL, I'd imagine the gold or brown, but it depends on the forage in your waters.

If a bass is in a lake that has no trout, what does it think when it sees a trout bait? My guess is it thinks "I could eat that".  :eyebrows:

If ya don't tell em there aint no trout they'll never know!

Getting a color that matches natural forage definetly won't hurt but they wil bite anything. I have plenty of hudd colors that resemble nothing and have caught fish. They actually make way more colors then you see but lots are limited runs. You can always look for a bass pattern and if they are out Ayu is a solid color. I have had a lot of Ayu and they work great.

The 68 Special in Hitch is a great bait for a variety of different waters for bass.
