I'm needing a new rod for close quarters combat.

 

How do the Dobyns 683/684 compare to their longer counterparts the 733/734?

 

I would imagine that because of the shorter length, the shorter rod may feel more powerful.

 

Looking for any helpful insight any of you may have.

 

I'll be giving them a call later this afternoon to see what the creator has to say as well.

Close quarters = 5'6" pistolgrip h action if your doin sb and jigs mh if your doin topwater but either action will work

Im curious what do you mean by close quarters? I fish a lake with tons of Cyprus trees so I'm constantly dodging branches and Spanish moss but I still use a 6 and a half to seven foot long rod for everything.

Exactly!

There are times I all the way back in brush that is shoulder high while I'm on the deck.

Then some times I'm under boat docks

Both require different setups

Sorry for being so vague! Really all I'm looking for is how the two shorter rods compare to their longer counterparts for situations I feel a shorter rod is more comfortable or convenient to use.

 

I've got the longer rods and love them both, just looking to add something else to the lineup.

Short rods are super fun, man!! They are hella more accurate especially when shooting under trees and into crevices. They are lighter and feel more balanced when palming. I've got 6', 6'6", 6'10", and 7' rods. My 6'6" feels best in my hands because it's a better quality rod than my 6'...otherwise the shorter the better for tight quarters. It obvously won't cast as far as my 7', but it will be more appropriate in some situations.

 

(I've actuallly considered cutting it down to 5'6")

I like a short rod with a long rear grip, stout power and "not so fast" action. This mostly for jigs and plastics. For moving baits, I just use my topwater rig.

I have a 6' ML fast St. Croix Avid spinning rod with a older Shimano Stradic 2500.  Anytime I get stuck somewhere and need to toss a weightless worm, small spinnerbait or even a topwater lure, this set up fits the bill.
