its muddy as all get out. Water temp about 58. I live in a farm town and most ponds are an acre or less but one may be nice and deep green while the other is orange mud. I want to fish this one especially because I can throw my boat in but the mud has gotten me down. Should I give it a try with a black jig or spinner bait?

Yeah a black spinnerbait with a Colorado blade or a bladed jig might be a good choice. A loud square I'll in chartreuse black back is nice choice as well. Might as well try it and see! Can't know until you try!

If you have some access to some unpressured water do not let muddy water slow you down! It might be a gold mine.

 

Do you think it is off colored all the time or it is perhaps because of some recent heavy rainfall? Also, the water temperature is currently only 58 degrees? Have your current night time temperatures been dipping pretty low? At any rate, when I see that type of water I start looking for bass shallow and very tight to cover. A black & blue jig is a great tool for extracting them. Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I don't understand this one. Most larger ponds (2 acres or more in my area) are usually deeper green stain but this one is one of the largest and its just muddy. Not orange like cow ponds but more mud color than orange. Has a nice spillway also and is deeper than most in the area. Will give it a try and report back. Thanks!

nope, lots of cover. Cant walk around it but maybe 1/8 of it.

I like fishing muddy ponds. The fish are less aware of your presence, and power fishing is generally your best bet, which is the most fun way to fish if you ask me.

If the pond is muddy then there is a feeder creek or shoreline runoff into the pond.  If you can walk around only 1/8 of the pond you need to decipher where the muddy water is originating.

 

As for muddy water, don't be bashful about fishing it.  Bass will go into muddy water or stay under the muddy section of the water column to feed and also rest/relax as they have cover over their heads which they like.

 

Remember a bass has three senses:  sight - vibration - scent.

 

A bass living in muddy water will feel the vibration and then look for the origin. it is up to you to throw something that gives off vibrations in muddy water.

Sounds like a vibrating jig dream come true. Can you image what a jigger bug could do in the early morning in that type of water? Man the explosions would be epic.

Some topwater would be fun and I bet some heavy jigs would work just fine.

Don't let the mud get you down. They've gotta eat regardless of clarity. 58 seems crazy low for your neck of the woods right now. Maybe a spring feeding it? My best results have always come with a tequila sunrise worm Texas rigged in small, muddy water. Vibrating, noisy lures, etc make the most sense but I've always had better luck with the worm. I'd throw that or a heavy dark colored Colorado blade spinnerbait. Not like a conservative blade, one that feels like a helicopter on the end of the line and I like a slower rhythmic retrieve with that. Don't know if it makes a difference but my thought is that they can nail it easier than the erratic retrieve I would use in clearer water. Just experiment but don't be put off by the water clarity.

Guys. My biggest bass to date was a 2 or 3 pounder. I went to another pond today in my new boat. It was also a little muddy. I threw in a 1/2 ounce black and blue jig and didn't get a bite for 2 hours. Finally I got to a part that was heavily covered and bam. I bagged a 6 pounder. It almost pulled me up on the bank!! Gonna try to get a picture up. Best day ever.
