Skipping Jig

Featured Replies

Hey guys I'm thinking about getting a rod that can flex enough to skip jigs under docks just looking for suggestions and preferably under $100

For skipping jigs the reel is a lot more important then the rod.

I would stick with a shorter rod around 6'10 or less. The Okuma Concept that's on sale in a 6'6" MH looks good to me. Pair it up with a 28+ IPT reel and you're good to go.

I agree with T up there. Adjusting your reel correctly is more important than the rod. You can use any rod to skip a jig.

I have several jig rods, I can skip with any of them if my reel is set to skip with them. They range from 6' 10" MH/F to 7' 6" H/F.

hopefully this isn't too off topic or hijacking but, how do you guys set your reel up for skipping?

I don't know how any one else does it, but this is how I do it.............spool tension loose, looser than "normal" for regular casting, and mag. breaks set high enough to keep overruns to a minimum. I disagree that the rod is not also an important part, a little pit of a tip that loads helps greatly. YMMV, but I can skip weightless plastics doing it my way better than most guys can with spinning gear, and skipping jigs/frogs/weighted plastics is almost a breeze.

Kistler Cardon Steel MH 6'9 mod fast tip is great. I don't do much of anything special to setup the reel. Just use 3/8oz arky style jig and a flat type trailer.
