Went out on a small lake near me today and while I only managed to catch one bass I did wind up landing  2 Muskie!.  All 3 fish hit a black on black 3/8 Cavitron buzzbait.  The first Muskie was 7 1/2lbs and the second was 12lbs. In the Muskie world these aren't considered very big but for me fishing out of a Jackson Cuda 12' kayak it sure was an accomplishment!  I've never caught a Muskie before and definitely had my hands full with these two.  I've heard stories about how powerful these fish were....I believe it now!!

I agree the Cavitron's are GREAT!  I couldn't believe how hard these fish slammed that buzzbait.  When I saw the water rising behind the buzzbait on the first one my heart started pounding!!  They truly are amazing fish.

Not sure where you're fishing, but give the Madison Chain a try. There are some BIG muskies in there. Caught a couple in a bass tournament in the fall down there, but lost a few as well and had multiple follows one of which would have been in the mid to upper 50's!

I was out on lake Wingra.  Fishing Bass beds this spring I saw some monster Muskie in the shallows.  Nothing beats the feeling of seeing something you think is a submerged log and it suddenly starts swimming around!

Thanks guys!  It was definitely one of those rare days that I won't forget!  I've been fishing this lake for a few years and have had many follows on top water baits but nothing hooked. 

Right on! There are several muskie lakes near me that I fish sometimes. I've never caught one before, but I have also seen them in the shallows occasionally and I've had suspicious-looking followers before....who knows if they've been responsible for a break-off here and there?

Nice fish, I am sure that was a good fight. I have never caught a muskie or pike, just pickerel. But I agree that the wake behind your bait makes my heart pound too! Thanks for sharing!

I'd love to say it was skill.  In actuality it was pure luck.....with a little help from the Cavitron. The Muskie didn't get the nickname "fish of 10,000 casts" for nothing.  Fishing has been pretty slow for me this year, so this definitely lit the fire again. 

Great fish! My brother in law (kanasbassfisher08) caught his first 2 muskie ever about 30 minutes apart from each other on a Booyah Clacker buzzbait while we were bass fishing. First one ate it off his rod tip and threw water all over both of us. Second one pushed a huge wake right before that big head and mouth popped out of the water and engulfed his bait. He'd just taken the bait out of the package that night before he tied it on and it was destroyed, I think he got his monies worth though.

That is awesome!!  Thanks for sharing.  I'd say a sacrificial buzz bait is well worth it.  Not too many things compare to the feeling you get when that wake appears behind the buzz bait.  I've had it happen many times but nothing ever came of it until yesterday.  It's also a pretty weird feeling being pulled around in the kayak by a fish.

Yes, the bass was a decent one too.  Just over 3 lbs.

Did someone try and rip the gills out of this fish? I've heard of some people doing this to muskies due to them eating other fish. It's a shame to see some one hurt such a beautiful animal

It appeared like someone had but the fish had managed to survive. Crappies are king on the lake we were on, and it seems that some of the locals don't appreciate the resource they have in these muskie. They want to blame them for why they can't catch many bigger crappie when in reality it's probably because they keep every bigger crappie they catch so they never have a chance to get big.
