Would Anyone Fish A Tournament With A Spincast?

Recommended Posts

A silly question and just curious.  I think it'd be awesome if a pro showed up to a BASS or FLW event with a big ZEBCO logo on the front of their jersey just kill it with spincast gear.

It was a cool tribute by Klein.

The problem I have with spincast reels is you can't see what's going on with your line at a glance.  Line twist, loops and all that can form under cover until it's too late.

I like to know what the state of my line is on the spool before and after each cast :)

I believe Woo Daves used a Zebco 808 to skip under docks and such.  Years ago, I saw him using a spincast on TV--don't remember if it was a tourney but he was an advocate of spincasters in certain situations.

Does anybody have a link to a video of Klein using that zebco 33 in the classic? I checked YouTube but didn't see anything.

Thanks buzzed. I read beneath the pic and it seems like he just made his first cast with it as a nod to the history. Itd be neat if someone actually used one for a decent amount of time in the classic though.

I wouldnt have any such problem fishing my spincasts in tournaments

I can cast 40 yards easily and rarely have an issue.. in fact my setup has taken the equipment issue out of the equation for me.. its now all about the fish hunt.. lake strategy, tactics,  figuring them out, presentation

I'd never use a zebco 33 tho.. especially the "modern" models are trash imo

I don't fish tournies, so can't say yes to that, but I did do ok with my wife's spin cast reel one trip. The only issue I would see is that I like fireline and braid over mono so that would really be the thing that holds me back the most. I did pick up an UL under spin cast reel for panfish. Those things are great and it brings back a lot of good memories.

Man I hate spincasts with passion. I feel like my hate originates from when I was younger and everyone my age or googans had them, so if I needed to borrow a rod, I'd be screwed. Plus backlash is awful when you cant see it. But its sorta funny seeing an angler at the top level using one.

My first club tourney I showed up with a Zebco 802 and an upside down Johnson Century . I didnt even know  baitcaster's  were used for casting lures . Second bass tourney I had two used Abu 5000's with high speed gears installed. I used a big Blakemore CC spinnerbait because it was the only thing I had heavy enough to cast. LOL. and I won that tourney .It was all luck.

I have one spinning reel, don't even remember the brand.  I'm not very accurate with it.  I have 15 or 16 spincast combos.  All are Zebcos. I have fished with them in a few tournaments(and even won one). Caught my pb at Guntersville on a Zebco 33 Platinum. It makes my brother wonder how I outfish him with a Zebco combo and a crankbait that was received with the combo. Up against his $200+ outfits. I can cast very accurately with my little Zebcos, and have never had a problem landing a fish.

Unless a reel functions poorly (drag, pickup, wrong gear ratio) or malfunctions and causes a person to spend time addressing those issues, I really dont consider reels having much of a major factor in a person outfishing another person.

A person who knows the limits of his equipment and has it functioning w/o malfunction takes that piece of equipment out of the equation

I dont want to even think about a reel when fishing.. I wanna find and catch fish not worry about backlashes or malfunctions or worry about any aspect of my reel or equipment

and I am man enuf to say yes I use spincast and I catch sized and numbers of  fish regularly using spincast.. not that it should surprise anyone that a spincast could cause its not much a factor imo

I fished with a buddy who likes to use an old Abu 507 Gold Max, one of the old Abu spincast reels where you tap a ring on the front of the reel and it releases line to your finger tip, ready to cast.  Pretty neat system and I've always wondered why other spincast reels never picked up on that design.  We went into a cove infested with bedding male bass and he proceeded to make 3 casts to every 1 I could with a standard spinning reel, catching bass one after another.  There's something to be said for the speed with which you can make multiple casts with a spincast reel.  I've since bought a couple of old Abu spincasters of the same basic design and use them for dropshotting and skipping docks.  I can use any reel I like.  These are just fun, fast, and they work well.

that is exactly how i feel about spinning reels. i would take a spincasting reel over a spinning reel any day... and i do. i usually have 4 baitcasters and one spincasting rig (for smaller lures) on my boat.

In a tournament? Not unless I had to.

I fish in Fla lakes mostly where you're allways in some kind of grass.

They just don't have the power.

Now that being said. IF I was to use one it would be a Johnson Century 100 hands down. I have one of the original green ones with the pearl on the handle (I keep in the velvet bag that Crown Royal Whiskey comes in)

I've have had it for over 40yrs and a 50 yr anniversary model.

Find one of those...Now you got something

I gave my Johnson centuries away . Not because I didnt like them. Theres an older fisherman who I have a lot of respect for and that is all he uses.  He reverses the spool and uses them upside down on fly rods.  Only centuries have that capability . Being they are hard to come by , I let him  have them . He will get a lot more use out of them than I .
