Straight Shank Worm Hook For Wacky?

Featured Replies

This topic has probably been beat to death but i need some hook recomendation for the ol wacky rig.

I usually rig it in a 2/0 or 3/0 vmc wacky hook. Ive caught lots of fish but ive also lost tons of fish. Today i lost 3 fish and one of them could of been my personal best. He jumped right before and spit the hook.

Any hook recomendations to increase hook ups?

Would a straight shank hook work for wacky?

Also it seems that no matter how hard i set the hook it wont penetrate through the lips, the barb goes through but does not come out the other side of the fish.

I use braid with a flouro leader

I've used a lot for wacky as well.

My favorites are the Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse

hook from 4-2/0, and the Gam Drop shot/Split shot

hooks up to 2/0.

Find they've been the "stickiest" of the hooks I've

used which include VMC, Owner, Hayabusa, etc.

I assume you are referring to senkos? That worm is nearly as fat as the gap on the hooks you are using. Go to a 5/0 ewg and see in your hook ups improve. Oftentimes a senko will get doubled up on a strike. Now it is twice as thick and will prevent a smaller hook from properly penetrating the fish's mouth.

Sure, you can use a straight shank. I do. I also use owner mosquito 3/0 needle point & cutting point. 2/0 or 3/0 in owner SS should be fine.

Works outstandingly for me hook-up % is great with straight shank hook and I use a small size hook #2. I think something to do with the thinner wire. Cant say though that I never have lost a bass while it jumped on me but I try my best not to let it jump in the first place.

Oh just to toss this out, did you check to make sure the hook was sharp and wasnt rounded or dull???

Used to catch my previous PB

Funny I was thinking about this the other day...

I first time I fished a wacky rig was on a gold Aberdeen style hook size 4 I think, at least that is the first time I seen a wacky rig in the early 90's. A 4" ring fry with a gold Aberdeen worked as a topwater. I am not saying that is it's birth or anything, just how it was introduced to me.

I mainly throw octopus hooks now, but think I owe my roots a visit!

After missing a few on "normal" wacky hooks I went to a offset wide gap and it works much better.

The rod may have something to do with it too. Make sure it has the power and action to get a good hookset. If I remember the hooks you'r e using aren't too heavy but it's definetely part of the equation.

I use the Gammy Octopus and Owner Mosquito hooks.

2/0 for finesse worms

4/0 for Senkos

My avatar is the 3/0 with Trick worm
