Baitcaster Line Keeps Breaking

Featured Replies

Hi my name is Luke and I have a relatively new Baitcaster the Abu Garcia black max and it's working really well. But my only problem is that my line keeps snapping off I'm using 8pound mono and the lure I'm using is a chatterbait 3/8 ounces. The problem may be that my last guide is like bent and it's jagged so I think that makes the line thiner and thiner. Also it makes sounds when I reel my line back in. I can return the one I have and get new black max but I'm afraid that the same problem will happen. If anyone could help me out that would be awesome

You already know what the issue is. It's not the reel, bait, or the line. It's the guide on your rod. It's cutting through your line. Exchange the rod!

Side note - #12 mono will be easier to learn on.

Replace the guide, or the rod.  Your next cast could be your fish of a lifetime.  Do you really want to chance breaking it off and living with that the rest of your life?

Replace the rod if you bought it recently if not replace the guide or take it to someone who can. You might also lose fish in the future if you keep using 8 lb mono on a baitcaster and using lures like a jig spinnerbait or chatterbait. Step up to at least 12 lb. Most of the time 8 lb will snap on hookset. Unless you just reel into the fish and have drag set looser. Then the hook might not go through the fishes mouth.
