Jigs Up

Featured Replies

I like them.  I am a pretty simple fella. I tend to get stuck on a lure and use it exclusively for a few years at a time.  I fish that lure in different places according to natural changes.  For awhile it was a spinner.  Then texas rigged craw.    Then buzz bait.  Then walking the dog with a stick bait.  It took about 30 years but  halfway through this summer I decided I would use more variations in tackle and add a jig to my pathetic tackle box.  I still have some buzz baits from 20 years ago lol.

I have been doing well with the jig and really like it.  I am not stuck on it, BUT, it keeps sticking to rocks, logs, or whatever I mistake for  fish and set the hook into.  Also lost a half dozen to Northern Pike and Pickerel.  Those tooth bastages burn me too often.  I retrieve a few by working backwards but some still have to stay.

I am tired of leaving $10 in the water every day.  I am sure as I get better at using the bait I will lose less but.... I have to find an alternative or my wife is gonna leave me.  Are there folks out there that sell these bitties cut rate in bulk?

I have tried a couple different types but seem to gravitate towards the Missle bait 3/8 and 1/2 oz mini flippin jigs.  I am not brand conscious though.  We have a lot of grass and moss in this river so something with a sleeker head seems to help.  Especially when that moss sinks to the bottom and turns black.  I cant get away from that stuff.

My desire is to find a less cost prohibitive jig.  If I have to buy components and put them together I am okay with that.  I a need a source for components if that is the solution.

Thanks,

Rick

on bassresource, when a jig question pops up you can expect one answer and for good reason....

Siebert Outdoors Jigs. Some of the best available at a price that beats about everyone.

You can make your own.  I buy the heads from a friend who makes jigs, and buy the skirts from other places.  My jigs cost me about $1.50 each.

KevO do you have a recommendation on where to get the parts?

Have you experimented with a number of different head shapes?  Took me quite a while to figure out what shapes and eye positions work best for me in which conditions.  I didn't realize for a long time that what I took to be very subtle difference made a huge difference in how they come through different conditions.  For the mostly timber, sometimes rocky conditions that I generally fish, I have trouble losing Siebert's Arky and Brush Jigs.  I'm sure it also has something to do with the way I fish them, but these work for me.  I tried a few others and even if they look the same, if the eye is closer to the 'top', or the weed guard is angled a little different....or whatever other slight differences, I may not go a cast or two without sticking it in something other than a bass mouth.

BTW, why is your fish drinking a Coke?

You can buy jig heads and skirts from bass pro, cabelas, TW anywhere really.  I buy my jig heads from Legal Limit Lures.

Thank you fellas.

I have tried a few different head shapes and jigs from a few different vendors.  The football head seems to be the least desirable for me.  It collects more junk than the more pointed styles.  I apologize, I am still new to jig fishing so the types and terms slip me.  To be honest I have no clue what separates a flipping jig from a casting jig from a finesse jig.  My gut tells me its more about how you want to use it than the name people give it.  I know I liked the Missle baits jig that I tried but do not like the price at the rate I lose them lol.  So I am looking for a close match to that jig.  I have a feeling I will be making these things in the future.  I have a habit of making my own stuff.

Fish is drinking an off brand cola because he is cheap and my old man thought it would help show the size in the photo.  That was my biggest of the summer.

Take a look at Fishing Skirts .com and Barlows tackle for skirt material and jig heads.

You find the site sponsor Siebert's is very competitive and offers custom colors.

x2. If you expect to lose alot...which fishing jigs most like you are. You can put together your own. Fun part!!! Customize a jig you want. What weedguards or shape head or depending where you buy from, hook brand and size. Color them yourself too.

The Ike mini flip is pretty unique in terms of head style and hook size.  It is basically a small Arky style jig.  The D&L baby advantage jig is a similar size and uses the same thin skirt material with a slightly different head shape.  The downside to the D&L is I don't find the head shape rips through grass quite as well and they don't come in a 1/2 oz size.  You could also try the strike king bitsy flip jigs but the skirts on them aren't nearly as nice and the head shape doesn't sit as well on the bottom.

The Siebert Outdoors Dock Rocker jig head is the closest style head I have found to the Ike mini flip.  Both those jigs are a little rounder than a standard arky head.  The Siebert jig  uses a full size hook, which I acutally think is better.  The only time I would maybe want a smaller hook is if I am targeting smallmouth, If I want a smaller profile I just trim the skirt and use a smaller trailer.  The effect should be pretty close for about half the cost.

I would defintiely recommend trying the Dock Rocker if you like the mini flip.  I also like the punch jig or bullet head swim jig around grass if you want to try a different shape.  Mike offers an awesome product for a great price.  I have tried a dozen different jigs and none can come close to the quality.  Then you look at the price of the Siebert jigs compared to the others and it is a no brainer.

It is a pity the Ike Mini Flip is so pricey.  I haven't used it a ton but it is a cool little head for sure.  I think you will be happy using a combination of the D&L and the Siebert Dock Rockers.

You could use lead punch weights and add a skirt to the sinker. That would be less expense and also be as sangless as a  Texas rig . I purchased some 1/4 ounce ones  off the net last year but dont remember who from .

In my opinion, placing a skirt behind the bullet sinker of a Texas rigged crawdad (such as a Chigger craw) is as good as it gets. This setup is more or less weedless and, unless you are using a tungsten weight, a lot less expensive to buy or replace than a regular jig.
