After doing the best research and without actually being able to test out many rods due to lack of availability near me, I have decided on the Dobyns 704c- a 7ft Heavy action (1/4-1oz) fast action rod.

 

Im re-posting from another thread as it was starting to drown out.

 

-I plan on using this for 1/2 oz jigs, 3/8 oz and up texas rigs, and other multitasking such as frogs, light swimbaits, etc.

 

-I will be primarily using this rod from a kayak, thus the reason why I want it in 7 ft.

 

- 80 percent of the time I will use this rod for jigs and soft plastics.

 

 

Are there any last minute reasons why this rod wouldn't be suited for what I'm using it for? Any reasons why this rod would be a good choice?

 

I plan on ordering this rod by the end of day.

I own 4 Dobyn's rods. 2 Champions and 2 Champion Extremes. I own the 704C and the 735C and both are excellent. Go with the 704C, you won't be disappointed.

If you get one that has been put together well I think you will be fine. You may want to look at the G Loomis E6X 844C or the IMX.

1/2oz jigs,3/8 +trigs and frogs belong on the 705. 704, for me, isnt enough rod

I would like to have the option to use 1/4 oz / 5/16 weights too..

The 4 power is better suited for 1/4 but anything over that i prefer a 5. I use a 5/16oz tungsten + beaver or tube a lot on a dx745. Perfect fit.

My DX 704 always has a 3/16 or 1/4 tungsten weight with a rage craw tied on. Dobyns 4 power rods are labeled as a heavy but they're like most other companies medium heavy rods. The 5 power is a better choice. A 1/4 weight plus your soft plastic and hook will weigh 3/8 or even more depending on the bait. Heck a 5" senko and hook weighs 3/8 without a weight. Get the 5 power. It'll work just fine for you.

Ok. I am leaning more towards a 705 now. I will wait for a bit more input. What pound braid would you recommend? I have 30 lb power pro spooled on my Mgx right now.

Just my opinion,  but I respectfully disagree with the posters above me. I have a 704c champion and it's more than capable of 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz range, in fact that's the sweet spot. Heck, Dobyns is being generous because I hated throwing 1/4 oz lures; the rod is too stiff and the distance isn't there for such a light weight. Lightest weight this rod is good for is 3/8.

I think it's perfect for hollow body frogs fishing over lily pads and even ripping baits through weeds/grass. The backbone is pretty powerful. I fished a 705 and felt like it was overkill.

Love my 704c for its versatility. I use it for everything from senkos, Texas rigs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, and even some moving baits like the whopper plopper Jr and pad crasher frog.

 

You will enjoy that 705 it's a good rod. As for your line 30lb braid would work but I personally prefer 40lb.
