Megabass Jerkbait Fishing Questions

Featured Replies

Hey guys, just ordered my first megabass lure, the Ito vision 110. I got it in a gold color, not sure the exact type, but it looks good. I have been fishing jerkbaits the last few weeks, and have been doing pretty good using a rapala shadow rap. Anyways, it seems to me like the jerkbait bite is on, water temp was 47 degrees yesterday, and the lakes are really getting clear. My question is about using the snap clips, like duo snaps from berkley. I just started using them but was wondering what other more experienced jerkbait anglers thought of them as far as action of the jerkbait, and what about the split ring on the end, would you keep that with the snap or remove ithe split ring and hook directly to the eyelet? I know a lot of guys use a loop knot, but I don't have confidence in that, and just don't trust it when tying fluoro personally. Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks!

I have always tied direct to the split ring.I have never used a snap.i tie with a trylene knot.

Anyone know that color, or ever had luck on a gold one like this?

Thanks, I have heard the split ring adds more action with a snap, and others say it made the bait not work properly.  I should have just tried hooking it to the eyelet and see what happened.  I have high hopes for this bait!  I was tying line directly to the split ring with a palomar knot, and getting hit a few weeks ago, but then found out that's not the right knot, and it hinders action.  It made sense to me to use a duo clip, as the bait can rotate freely around the loop in the clip between jerks.  I never had any luck with the jerkbait in the spring, or ever for that matter, but for some reason now that its fall, and water cooling down before ice, I'm gaining confidence!  Just want to pull one more hog before I hang up the bass gear until mid to late spring!

If you're going to use a snap you should remove the split ring.

This. A snap is fine, without the split ring.

It looks like a Tennessee Shad to me. It looks like a nice color but if I have one I can't remember using it.

I always use a snap to attach the bait. With or without the split ring it doesn't seem to make a difference. You could remove the split ring if you think the weight of the snap has an adverse effect. That way the added weight of the snap is compensated by the removal of the split ring.

If you tie a palomar knot to the split ring you'll be fine, a loop knot was used for baits that didn't have a split ring. On baits that suspend perfect I will not use a snap but when I do use a snap on jerkbaits, I'll just attach it right to the split ring and I don't have any problems. With a square bill I'll either attach a snap to the line tie and remove the split ring or I'll tie direct to the split ring, and now I'm wondering why I do that. So, if anyone knows why they don't use a split ring with a snap feel free to let me know why because I do it on fast moving baits and I'm not sure why I've been doing it.

When I first read this thread, I wondered the same thing. I often use a snap with split rings.

i use a snap for easy changes, doesnt seem to affect the action on my jerkbaits(mostly LC Pointers), but my wrist snaps seem to change the action more than anything.

Exactly this right here.

If the added weight makes it suspend weird then remove the splitring. As long as it seems ok with both on it then it don't matter really/

I use a spro 50lb snap and straight florocarbon. I don't remove the split ring. I haven't seen a difference with or without on the 110. But I do remove the split ring on the mini.
