What Is With The Price Drop In Lc Squarebill Cranks

Recommended Posts

When Lucky Craft had the Rick Clunn Squarebill and even the Tak Omari Squarebills I paid $13+ per crankbiat. Now that a pro is not backing the squarebill line they are $7. If this me over analyzing or was Lucky Craft using pro names to get more money? I seen all the pro backed baits are still $14 but the squarebill and popper are not associated with a pro and are $7.

I was wondering the same thing as well. I ordered two of the new $7 versions on my latest TW order on Black Friday. I'm curious to see if there is a difference.

Apparently the hook quality went down the drain and the 6.99 LC doesn't use good stock hooks.

Also, according to somebody that deals /w LC, they are only quality controlling 1 out of every 100. Also no tungsten ball. Paint is supposedly pretty good but if you're thinking you're getting a "real" LC 1.5 for 6.99, it sounds like you are not getting a bait close to on par /w the regular 1.5's.. Most likely a KVD 1.5 /w different colors and the LC name.

What?  There is no way LC would sell Strike King Baits under their name nor are the two baits even the same size or weight.  If you looked at his Lucky Strike line of baits they are around the same price point.  You're idea of them being KVD's sold under LC is just unrealistic and false.  But nice try.

I don't think he meant it was literally a KVD 1.5, just similar quality.

Yes but not phrased that way.  I can't see why the complaint about not paying $13 for a bait?  Rick's cheap Lucky Strike Squarebills caught fish and were almost the same price though.  Caught many many bass on KVD 1.5's over the years without any issues.  So not sure what the quality problem is other then swapping out hooks which runs all of what maybe a dollar?  So that KVD with upgraded hooks would be about $6.99.  Now if you have to buy a LC for that price as he stated and change the hooks, now you have an $8 bait.  Same quality....well then it's an overpriced crankbait if it's equal to a KVD.  But I get what you're saying.

I am not complaining about the price drop, I was curious what they were doing differently to make them cheaper. I found the KVD 1.5 to not be consistent. There quality control seems pretty low. I switched to mainly using Bomber or River2Sea baits. Their quality control seems very consistent.

Most of my 1.5's are older, think I've bought 2 in the last couple years.  May be a cheap production model Rick Clunn wanted and uses though.  His jerkbait had a lot of people upset that the Lucky Strike jerkbait was really similar to the LC Pointer.  Maybe they compromised for him on his bait and in that price point.

Huh..?  Pump your breaks Francis....I don't know how you got that I'm telling you they are KVD's being sold under the LC name....

Hopefully this is more clear:

The new 6.99 LC, according to a person that deals /w LC, isn't what you're typically accustomed to getting in a LC name brand crankbait. They are only quality controlling/inspecting 1 out of 100-I'm sure you can make the leap to what that means.

It's hooks, according to a couple folks that have used them, have been called "crap" and "dull". (obviously this is relative to the hooks you normally are used to on a LC crankbait.)

Paint is allegedly solid.

These baits most likely will be your typical mass produced OEM crankbait (not as "quality driven" as say for example the LC 1.5 DRS.) much like the LS 3/4 and KVD 1.5 but it will have a LC name.

Nobody is saying this is a "bad" thing. Just answering the OP's question as to why for the decrease in price.

I can't see why the complaint about not paying $13 for a bait?

Neither can I.... or anybody else in this thread....nobody is "complaining" about not having to pay 13$ .

Rick's cheap Lucky Strike Squarebills caught fish and were almost the same price though.  Caught many many bass on KVD 1.5's over the years without any issues.

Cool story. I've had more KVD's break and crack that I prefer but it's still not a bad bait vs its price. They also seem to run inconsistent but again, that's what you get for a lower priced crank bait. Still...decent bait.

So not sure what the quality problem is other then swapping out hooks which runs all of what maybe a dollar?

The quality/performance difference between the RC 1.5 and KVD 1.5, to me, was noticeable.

I would like the name of your treble guy...I wish upgrade trebles were only 1$ per bait...

Same quality of...a KVD 1.5? Sure....but a, for example,  "regular" silent 13.99 1.5, would all but guarantee they aren't even close to the same bait.

Again, nobody is arguing this is a bad bait...it's just most likely not the same bait as the one that costs twice as much.

For what it's worth, I will be buying the BE Gill color.

Man, that was a long reply....lol  No worries, I read it and looked at the two baits before even replying and it was an observation.  Besides, you know we have new people all the time on here that will run with that info, even if it's wrong.  Had to put it out there.  No bad intentions or jabs.  As for my hooks, I was off a bit, a little more then a $1......$1.18 each to be exact less tax of course.  Pack of Mustad 1x Strong 2x Short are $6.49 a pack of 11.  2 packs does 11 baits which would average 1.18 a bait. The price per bait does jump a bit when I move to the #2's though to $1.26.   LOL, now you have the name to my treble guy. :xmasicon_mrgreen:

I talked to guys that got them and had to order some myself and then emailed Lucky Craft USA to find what the deal was. What I can tell you is that the more expensive ones are still available but the $6.99 version was made as sort of a "Thank you" to American customers for loyalty, the difference is they are only available in a few colors, no high end finishes and the hooks aren't the same but they aren't junk either. I haven't got to use mine and won't until spring but with people I've talked to that have order more after using them told that the action and durability seems to be close to the same as the RTO with the less expensive version being a little larger which is probably due to the fact that they don't have the Tungstun ball inside so it has to be larger and because it is larger the diving depth is less. 3' to 3.5' depending on line size is what I was told. In the email I asked about the 1 in 100 being checked for quality and the response I got is the Lucky Craft has a very strict quality standard that applies to everything that they produce regardless of price point, now they didn't confirm or deny that claim but rather side stepped it so who knows for sure but I like what I see and they are good enough with just the right amount of patterns that I will have a few more before they go away.

Its called "they snagged ya" when who ever wins with a certain bait they know there are plenty of amatuer and avid fishermen/women who are gullable enough to think they will prosper with said lure ,,,they could put KVD on a peice of ice in the artic and sell it for $20

I can say that the Castastic BD squarebills are probably the best cranks at the $7 price. I may try the $7 LC again. But those Boyd Duckett baits are good. I was just curious of the price drop.

It isn't a price drop, it is a separate bait as they still make the higher end model. The email response I got from them was that they wanted to make a series of lures at a lower price point as a "thank you" to their loyal customers in the U.S. and to also introduce to brand to those who haven't used Lucky Craft yet due to the price. They also said the baits are genuine Lucky Craft and they are produced to the same standard, the difference is there are only a limited number of color options and the hooks aren't the same. They also are making a less expensive jerkbait called the Lightning Pointer XR which is a slow sinking bait that runs $9 to $10.
