New On The Bass Scene

Featured Replies

Hey guys been fishing for about a year now mostly sturgeon and strippers off a tidal river now getting into bass. I just picked up a 6ft 6 Fenwick HMX M/fast with an Abu Garcia orra sx reel. Now that its winter time what tackle and line would you guys suggest? Thanks

I heard the strippers like longer rods..

Had the same problem with autocorrect, but have to admit that there is funny :)

Welcome aboard!

Put some 15lb braid on the reel as your

mainline, then tie on a leader of anything

else - i.e., mono, copoly, or fluorocarbon.

The braid will be far more manageable than

any other line on your reel, and the leader

will provide you a number of lure reties

without cutting in to your braid.

Cost-effective, that way....

Ha-ha good old auto correct. Awesome I'll do that then. Thanks for the advice

Welcome to the forum.  Spinning or baitcast?  If baitcast, are you proficient with one?  15# braid is fine with a spinning reel, but if you are new to using a baitcast reel, then I personally feel it is a little too light.  It takes a little more maintenance to keep it from digging in.  Line needs to stay tight on the spool.

if its not freezing temps - 20-30lb braid (power pro) with or without FC leader

or

12 or 14lb FC (sunline sniper) - rocks, clear water

or

12 or 14lb copoly or hybrid (yo-zuri hybrid) - all around line

i usually do slow bottom presentations or slow roll a spinnerbait when the water is cold.

Baitcasting reel. If I do the leaders would they be about a 12 inches long?

When tying a flouro leader to my braid, I usually tie my knot and then start to reel it in. Once it gets about halfway down my rod, I will cut it off about 3 foot from the tip of the rod. That way, My leader is about 7-9 foot. Some guys think that is way too long, but I hate retying braid to flouro, so If I break off , or retie a lure, I have plenty left to fish with throughout the day.

i have looked into this Yo Zuri hybrid line that i guess is the best of both worlds when it comes to flouro and braid. i saw a thread about this and seems like alot of people have only a good thing to say about this line
