Shakey Head In Winter

Featured Replies

Does anyone use Shakey heads in the winter. I have some finesse mega strike Shakey heads that I was thinking about throwing with a minnow or small Crayfish imitation on. My though is you can fish them really slow so it might work. Just not a big plastics guy in winter. Any info. Is appreciated.

It can be a great technique. I normally downsize as much as I can. Smallie beaver etc. tiny paca craw

I do.

If the fish are on the bottom and there aren't too many leaves it can be very good.

I was out last weekend and those around that were catching were all using shakey heads.  I tried hard to copy them, but had no luck.  I don't think it had to do with color or exact bait.  I just do not yet have the patience for that kind of fishing.  I saw multiple boats that stayed in one place for more than 20 minutes (some closer to an hour) with baits sitting still on the bottom for minutes at a time.  I'm like Mr. Owl in the old Tootsie Pop commercial.....1, 2, 3....Done.

I took a little comfort in noting that I didn't see anything other than dinks on the end of the tight lines, but I'm sure there were some nice ones being caught

i would start big with a shakey but if no takers quickly downsize to Ned rig

I caught my first ever largemouth in water under 40 degrees on a 1/16oz shaky head with a 3/0 hook and a 4.5" straight tail finesse worm. I've caught a lot of smallmouth in water that just above freezing but largemouth have always been tough for me when the water gets down to 38 degree or so. I now use it every year in winter as long as there isn't ice on the lake, I start with a hair jig and if I can get any takers I'll go with the shaky head and it has paid off a few times for me. The only advice I can give you would be to go a light as you can,you aren't going to work it much so you want it to fall slow and then let it sit, dead stick style. Once it sits for like a minute, I'll give it a small movement, not much and have a light head forces you to move it slow.

32 degrees today, I threw a size 1 owner finesse ultrahead with a zoom finesse worm. Made a bitter cold day worth it

I've been using baby rage craws and zoom finesse worms as of latley. Fish them slow as possible. Light line and medium to medium light action rod for me. I throw anything smaller than 3/16 on spinning gear.
