Smallie Jerks

Featured Replies

Hey guys, what jerkbaits do you use for Smallmouth? I saw a general jerkbait forum that had lots of good info and it got me wondering about smallmouth specifically. Do you down size? Any particular go-to colors? Preferred brand? Divulge!

I don't downsize for smallmouth. I have really good success with pearl and bone colored jerkbaits for smallmouth around here. I've very fond of the STX in French Pearl, LC Slender Pointer 97MR in gunmetal shad, and a custom painted jerkbait from a member on the board in a color called sizzlefry. I also have a 110+1 blank from the same member in a pink/white/chartreuse that I caught one of my biggest smallmouth of the year last year with. My largest of the year was on a STX in pro blue.

This is the sizzlefry

Those are some great fish, man! I really like the look of that sizzlefry.

I've heard good things about the LC slender pointer as well. Ive wanted to try one out but i cant find them in stores around here so i have to get them online. Hoping to find a few on sale soon!

That sizzlefry was a killer for me last year, including my second largest wiper ever and new lake PB largemouth for one of my favorite smallmouth lakes.

As for the Slender Pointers, you can probably find a few here.

Some great looking bass there! I'm particularly fond of the XR-10 X-Rap in their "hot head" pattern. Has really paid off for me over many past spring seasons.

I wish the Pointers weren't so darn expensive! I do really like husky jerks, xraps and shadow raps however.

I've also used smithwick suspending rogues too on a few occasions with success.

Storm twitch stik worked well this fall along with X Raps.

4-6 in gold/orange and black smithwick suspending rouges are tough to beat in clear water. 6-8 lb fluorocarbon will get it down a little. Olive green and pearl husky jerks are great too!

For smallmouth I really like the pointer100, especially in chartreuse shad color.

X-raps, husky jerks, and rouges are some other favorites.

Depends on the water temp and how aggressive the fish are. Different baits have subtle unique characteristics. Long days on the water with nothing but a jerkbait box will teach you a lot, and it changes often. Put in the time. If your bait doesn't have an orange belly you're doing it wrong. I've narrowed my box down to Spro McRips 90s, yo Zuri 3db minnows, lucky craft 78 pointers, ima flit 100s, and R2S Humbug minnows. They all have there time and place.

I don't downsize the lure for smallmouth but I do try to avoid lures with 3 trebles... They have a tendency to hook a smallmouth's eye more often.  Switched to a Shadow Rap this past year and seemed to work well - and with 2 trebles.

Shadow raps worked very well for me last spring. This winter I have picked up a few kvd jerk baits to try as well. Carbon and clown were the two best colors I found in the shadow rap

I swapped the trailing treble on my Shadow Raps (as well as a few other crankbaits) for a single hook.  The fallfish always bit the trailing hook, and it was a PITA to unhook them because of their little mouths.

One of my favorites is a 90's (I think) suspending Long A with KVD's signature on the side. It's a translucent blue with an orange belly. I don't fish it often as I am scared to death of losing it.

I took the suggestion from Bluebasser86 a couple of years ago and bought a few STX and STX2's and they have been fantastic. French Pearl and Secret Night being my top producers.

Husky jerks in Tennessee Shad and Glass Minnow have also produced.

Really like the Rapala Shadow Rap..
