Brackish water bass reels?

Featured Replies

Down here in Florida there are canals, lot's of em.  they run fresh, but toward the mouth they mix with the salt creating some very cool fishing opportunities

I have been in canals where you could catch LMB, and snook on the same trip.

I've acutally done it, but am concerned how the slightly water would affect the reels.   I use a Daiwa steez, a Daiwa Sol, and Daiwa TDZ's

all beautiful reels in excellent condition and not cheap so I wouldn't want to ruin them, but man, I just can't resist catching bass and snook at the same time!

Get an Abu Garcia and install the stainless gears...

is there any disadvantage to having a salt reel? i'm sure it will work fine for freshwater

I would check out Quantum reels. Take a look at their website.. They have a video on corossion resistance.

Brave man the one who fishes a Steez and a TDZ in brackish waters, they are NOT salt safe. The Sol was not sold as being salt/brackish safe for having only a polished aluminum surface, however, aluminum is much more corrosion resistant than Magnesium.

If you want a salt/brackish safe reel try the Daiwa Coastal, the older model is pretty much an aluminum TDZ.

I recently sold both of my Steez reels for this very reason.  I didn't want to take a chance on ruining them fishing in brackish water.  These days, it isn't difficult to find good reels that you don't have to do any more than rinse off after fishing.  Why risk it?

We have the same thing down here on the Louisiana/Texas coast, we catch bass & redfish in the same waters.

I've 2 Calcutta that's 30+ yrs old that I use in fresh, brackish, & salt. The #1 Speck & redfish setup down here is a Duckett Ghost with either a Shimano Citica or a Lew's Speed Spool.

H20 express mettle it's the only good cheaper reel I've ever seen. I've got a couple and really like them

I wouldn't use a reel with magnesium parts in salt or brackish water. Also if you think your tackle should be hanging at the Louvres, there is that. Otherwise rinse in fresh water and dry after use, maybe a little WD, BoeShield, or the like wiped on, and it should be fine. The Calcutta recommendation above is spot on (it started as a salt water reel after all). I use 4600/5500 and the Cabela's Prodigy made by Diawa for striped bass, bluefish and flounder all the time with no issues.
