Anyone have any input as to what is going on with the tail?  This isn't the first, but seems to be the most drastic.

That's a common thing during spawning season. They'll tear their tails up on the bottom fanning the silt off their eggs to keep them from dying. It'll heal up later in the year, nothing to be concerned about.
